Potty training troubles....

I have a 8 month old Lhasa puppy. I am currently attempting to crate train him. He does fine until I go to let him out of the crate. As soon as go to open the crate he goes potty. I usually scold him for it and then take him outside. He will usually go while he is outside. This is becoming extremly frustrating. Any ideas on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dave
