Alot depends on the background of the dog. If it was at a pet shop,leave it there, and go to a reputable breeder. I have a Lhasa and a Shih Tzu. Lhasas as a general rule tend to be guarded with people they dont know. Shit Tzus were originally bred for the sole purpose of companion dogs while Lhasa Apsos were for guard dogs. You may want to look at a Shih Tzu too. Same look, different attitude. As I said though mostly it depends on the lineage of the dog and how you treat it.

Just know the background of ANY breed you decide on and get REFERENCES on the breeder!! Avoid a heartache later, it is worth the effort. This applies to the health of the puppy too. There are many problems that are passed from parent to puppy and you want to be sure your puppy will be a happy healthy member of your family for a long, long time.
