Lhasa Apso: AKC vs APR
|
Posted Date: 2003-10-10 08:05:21 By: yurialamel
I'd like to tell everyone that if you are looking to buy a puppy, do not buy from a breeder who does not use the AKC to register their dogs. AKC and APR are worlds apart when it comes to quality of records kept, and reputation of breeders patronizing the registry. APR was founded to cover a need of disreputible breeders who could no longer register their dogs with AKC because of various reasons. Many were suspended by the AKC for rules violations. Some purchased dogs with spay neuter contracts and limited AKC registration, and choose to break those contracts and breed anyway. To register their puppies, they went with APR, so they could get more money for 'registered' puppies.
BUYER BEWARE!
If you are buying a puppy, make sure you get a guarantee for health that exceeds 1 year. An ethical breeder will provide at least 5 years, and possibly a lifetime guarantee against hereditary defects.
Make sure you get a guarantee that the puppy is AKC registered. Anything else is worth less than the paper its written on.

Lhasa Apso: Potty training troubles....

I have a 8 month old Lhasa puppy. I am currently attempting to crate train him. He does fine until I go to let him out of the crate. As soon as go to open the crate he goes potty. I usually scold him for it and then take him outside. He will usually go while he is outside. This is becoming extremly frustrating. Any ideas on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I also have a new lhasa apso puppy, and have questions. I am offering her food 3 times a day, and she does not eat as much as recommended on the bag for her weight. She is just 7 weeks old, 2 lbs 11 oz. a few days ago. I am offering her 1/4 cup food each time. Sometimes she eats it all, sometims she just nibbles. It is dry food, and I moisten it for her a little bit.
We are crate training her, and it seems to be going well. She still has accidents, but if we pay close attention to her, it only happens about once a day. No messing the last couple of nights. She is a cutie! |

Dear Breeders,
I own a lhasa Apso, and jsut recentley has actually gone crazy on us , we dont know what is wrong with her. My child had surgery and she started to bite people after that. The only thing i could think of (why my dog is biting) is that my daughter used to do everything with my dog and now she cant do anything with her. So what do you think about this? I dont know what to do and i am afraid she may bite my daughter she already bit me. please help |

Can I ask how many of you have a dog 8 years okd or older? The reason in asking this is, my brother lives with an older couple in Florida that has a Lasha thats probly 9 at this time. He has a skin problem that makes him stink almost as soon as hes bathed and dryed. My brother says the hair is short and scarce. He has been to a vet that told the people the smell is from old age. I dont think this is true but my brother cant tell them different and he cant even recomend them takeing him to another vet or to try different shampoo. Can you give me some feedback on your dogs? My little boy is only a little over two now and I know for sure Id be trying to help him. Thanks, Gabby |

The crystals are calcium...my fuzzy friend is too acidic...needs to be more alkaline. The diet of veggie dog food has improved his chemistry balance, but he still is blocked and Im no longer having success cathing him. Who or what would you suggest? Knowledgeable website addresses? I have a 6 yr old. male, neutered Lhasa and I have an opportunity to adopt a 2 yr old female Lhasa. My dilemma is that my male has a dominant personality and tends to get jealous. He has come a long ways regarding his behavior (would nip if he didnt get his way) and I dont want to set him back by bringing another dog in. He also tends to really like other dogs that are smaller than he is and are not dominant. The female that is up for adoption is smaller than the male and seems to have a very sweet disposition. I would appreciate opinions as to if adopting the female would be a good thing to do. I just dont want to do the wrong thing as the little female has already been in two homes and if I adopt her, I want my home to be her final one. Thanks!! |

I would just like to share with other owners of Lhasa Apsos how much we love our two Lhasas.
As of right now we own two Lhasas: Bennie and Sammie. Bennie is the "boss" of the family and is very protective of our whole family. He is very stubborn and constantly needs to know what is going on in our household. He is 5 years old, and we would not give him up for a thousand dollars. Our other dog, Sammie is 3 years old and is the biggest sweetheart in the world. She loves her toys and loves to tease Bennie more than anything else!
Our dogs are high maintenence. They only drink cold water, and must have their dog food heated up before they will eat it. (Our dog Bennie wakes up my father every day at 6:00am to get his treat)
I cant describe how much our two dogs are a part of our family. The very first Lhasa we had lived to be 17 years old, and it was very difficult to part with her. But since we have two more to keep us busy, we consider ourselves ble |

My vet says except for a few minor points that he is otherwise healthy. Many have commented to me on his larger size. He was certified (as a L.A.) when I first got him . I am doing some research on this breed. We want to get a small dog for out 6 year old daughter. We have 2 younger girls as well, 3 and 1. We have been looking for a while so that we find the perfect puppy for our family. We found a female Lhasa a couple days ago, and my daughter fell in love with her, she is very sweet and mellow. The problem is, I have heard that they are really not good with small children and that they are snappy. I am also worried about the gooming, I do not have much time for that. My girls are loving and gentle, but they are young. I want to make a good decision, any information would be helpful. Thank-you, Angela |

I went through this a little over three years ago with Gabby. I got him at just over8 weeks old. I fed him in the morning, about 12:P.M. and about three or four. I fed and still feed Pedigree dry and canned. I feed 1 cupand a tablespoon of wet. Just devide this into thirds. I also nuck it for 1 min. just to warm it just a little. All my little ones like it this way. Also you sound your on the right track on house training. I took Gabs out as soon asI heard him stir in the morning, right after each meal, after each play time and about 9 at night. I tried to stay up as late as possible. Then he almost slept through the night. I also kept him in a box next to my bed so I could hear him in the night. It did take about 4 months to house break him. Gabby |

I have raised lhasa apsos for 8 years and find that they are very good natured with children provide the children are good to them. You might find it is better to start with a puppy and raise with your children or an older dog that is familiar with children.Grooming is an issue. However many people who like lhasas have them cut down.If you have more questions you can e-mail me personally. |

Alot depends on the background of the dog. If it was at a pet shop, leave it there, and go to a reputable breeder. I have a Lhasa and a Shih Tzu. Lhasas as a general rule tend to be guarded with people they dont know. Shit Tzus were originally bred for the sole purpose of companion dogs while Lhasa Apsos were for guard dogs. You may want to look at a Shih Tzu too. Same look, different attitude. As I said though mostly it depends on the lineage of the dog and how you treat it.
Just know the background of ANY breed you decide on and get REFERENCES on the breeder!! Avoid a heartache later, it is worth the effort. This applies to the health of the puppy too. There are many problems that are passed from parent to puppy and you want to be sure your puppy will be a happy healthy member of your family for a long, long time. |

Hi everyone, I am new to the internet and happened upon this web site. I enjoyed reading the postings, so I thought I would add one of my own. I have a wondeful 3yr old Lhasa male. He is the light of my life and just cracks me up. He has a peculiar habit though. Whenever anyone enters my home ( including myself ) he grabs a shoe from the pile in the hallway and runs around the living room with it. After a few seconds he forgets about it. He does not chew or otherwise do anything to them. If someone or something is blocking his access to them, he gets frantic. I have never seen this behavior before and I was wondering if anyone else has. I do not have a problem with it. In fact, it makes me laugh. He does realize shoes are not appropriate toys for him. He does not even look at them until someone comes in. If anyone has any similar stories, please post them. I would love to read them. |

Hi there! Well i had decided for my family that a Lhasa apso pup would be perfect for us. Once i set my mind on something i cannot focus on anything else. Well i spent weeks looking for our pup and no luck until one day i found a pet store with one left and he was only $399.(i know bad me for going to a pet store) Woo hoo! i was so happy. So me and my three daughters went off on a half hour drive to this pet store. And there was our puppy all alone we played with him and just fell in love. After my transaction was completed i asked "What about his papers?" She explains to me they are only for full breed dogs. He is a Lhasa -poo and sure enough i look over on the label of his cage and it reads LHASA-POO. Well what could i say now, my children are lovingly adoring our new guy hes all payed for. Sheesh! Im standing there saying in my head "I just payed four hundred dollars for a mixed breed dog!" So away home we went. Hes a wonderfull intelligent little guy he looks just like a shitzu (s |

My friends and children adopted a Lhasa for my 40th this weekend. This animal was found on the side of the road with the coat so mangled that it had to be shaved. Also, the dog is so well trained that it is hard to believe that it was abandoned. It was found in rural Minnesota and seems to have been used to travelling. While I am curious if she is indeed "lost", I plan to keep her and give her a wonderful home, unless someone can prove she belongs with them. Therefore, I will not give out descriptive information. If anyone knows of a missing Lhasa from rural Minnesota, please e-mail me. |

My 3-year-old little angel has recently, and for no apparent reason (yes, the vet concurs) has become a biter. The suggestion has been to put her down because the problem continues to get worse. Yet anyone who owns one of these fearless, loyal, loving little creatures knows they quickly find the way to your heart. I love her dearly and would MUCH rather continue to try to solve the problem. Would love to hear from anyone who has had similar problems, regardless of the success or failure of the outcome. Thanks. |
