red mange?? Hereditary??

My black Lab is 11 months old and so far has been the picture of health. recently he developed a spot over his eye. within a day it was the size of a quarter and looked infected, I took him to the vet and they said it was red mange and that it's hereditary? He gave me an ointment but it's not looking any better, in fact it looks a bit worse, I called and he said that it takes about a month to take effect. Has anyone else gone through this? and how long did it take to go away? I'm worried because it's right by his eye. :(
