I live in Boise ID. Im looking for an Irish Setter female (pref) pup. I'm not looking to buy a "show quality" dog just one that will be loved and adored very much by a very loving family. We have 4 cats and a pound puppy already so it wouldnt be alone and it would have lots of companionship. We have a nice almost 1/2 acre fenced in back yard and a feild out back where it could run and play. We also have a nice sized dog run and a crate so it will be crate trained. If you or anyone you know have any puppies for sale please contact me. |

Hi,
I am located in Michigan. I am looking for a Irish Setter puppy or adult. I have a labrador retriever that I got at 12 months and I enjoy her so much. She would love to have a canine pal.
My husband had a setter for years and would really like to have another. Our dogs are inside dogs. Get a lot of exercise and walks. We spoil the animals.
thanks

We rescued a male Irish Setter from our local animal shelter, thought to be about 5-6 years old of March, 1999. Its our first experience with an Irish Setter. When we adopted him, he was bald from his mid-back down his hind legs. We nursed him back to health, his fur grew back in and he became the handsome dog that Irish Setters are known to be. Around September of last year, he began biting and pulling his fur out again although not to the extent of his original condition. Our vet gave him an injection of Vegalog, the itching subsided and his fur grew back in once again after a few months. Its started again. Im told this is allergies. He is on Advantage and we bathe him regularly in vet-recommended shampoo. Any other suggestions? I really hate to continue with cortizone injections if we can avoid it. My husband found a flea on him today and thinks that this very well may be a severe allergic reaction to flea bites. Any information anyone might share will be appreciated sin |

I read over this message board and was amazed... not a word on the Irish Setter being a bird dog. The board is full of people wanting nothing more than a pet, or a showdog. Are there not breeders around anymore that are actually trying to IMPROVE the breed? I just dont get it... a couple of hundred years goes into breeding a fine bird dog and now people want to destroy the breed making them nothing more than coach potatoes or balls of fur for the show ring. What a sad demise to a great dog. |

For the past two years, my 4-year-old irish/gordon setter mix has had a very dull coat, particularly along his sides, the chest and front legs (basically the feathers). The vet thought it was allergies but he was tested and didnt seem to be a problem. Vitamin supplements (oil) seemed to help, but werent consistent. id like to know if this is a common problem with irish or gordon setters and if anyone else has experienced that. if so, what can you do to revitalize the coat? |

Hi,
I am the proud "mommy" of a 12 year old male Irish Setter named Astro. I was hoping to locate other owners of a "senior setter" or if anyone can give me some info regarding ailing health of. Astro has arthritis since he was 8 yrs. old and in the past two months has started with bowel incontience on occassion, like when I go out and he is alone and sometimes its when he is laying down, makes no effort to get up to go outside. Just in the pst few months he is leary of going outside at night. So if anyone has any information that maybe helpful I would love to hear from you. I got him from Rakae Kennels who was located in Wall, NJ. in 1988. Astro is the light of our lives, made a impact he has made to us. thank you.

Hi all,
I was surfing for Irish Setter stuff and found these boards. I saw several people looking for an Irish Setter
and wanted to tell anyone who is looking to please please check with the Irish Setter rescue. There are
rescues in almost all states and if there isnt one in your state, they can get you in contact with the
closest one. (this goes for any breed of dog or cat--there are lots of breed rescues) There are always
wonderful dogs available looking for a loving home. I personally adopted an older Irish Setter, my first
reddog, 3 yrs ago. He has been a real love. I am looking to adopt another one soon. While its not
always easy to get a puppy, you can get young ones a yr or two old. Mine was about 5-6 yrs and
I havent regretted it one single day in my life.

I have a 6yr. old irish setter. She has been a great dog for many years. Early last year I went back to school full
time and had to leave her at home during the day. At first I let her have the run of the house but she began getting
afraid if there was a thunderstorm. We had to start putting her in the bathroom when I left so the house didnt get
destroyed. She still destroyed the bathroom. We have a 6ft. fence around our yard and she breaks through it to
get out within about 5 minutes of being let out. Things have gotten worse this past year. Shes a beautiful dog
and I would hate to give her up but my husband says that if we cant stop her hell have to think about putting her
to sleep. He says its cruel to leave her here alone during the day and cruel to have so afraid of thunder.
If anyone has any ideas please help... |

Hello. My husband and I are looking for a female puppy, as a companion only. We presently live in an apartment and will be moving into a house the beginning of May. The house does not as of yet have a fenced yard, but we are going to put one up. In the mean time I would take my puppy with me to my office with me, it is a six acre farm, where she can run and play. The majority of the time though, my husband is home so he can play with her and walk her. My parents also have two fenced yards, and we live rather close to them, so we have no problem exercising her.
We are interested in a puppy around May or June. Like I said before, we will not be showing her, she is only a part of our family. We will have one other dog, but she will only be a medium sized, mixed breed.
We want to be sure that the breeder we purchase from examines the puppy for CHD, and can provide paper work that the puppy is free and clear. We are just very weary because my husbands parents have |

I have raised two Irish Setters. The first one, Bridgette was raised mostly for quail and duck hunting. My father passed her down to me since she was not obeying orders. She was very confused between the custom of sporting and being a friend or companion. Her tempormant had changed and so did her attention span. I recommend anyone to raise thier setter with only one intention; either for sport or companionship. Bridgette passed at the age of 13yrs old.
Two years later, I purchased a new female puppy Irish Setter named Molly. The breeder home raised her dogs from which she had purchased once from the Cloverleaf farms in Crete Illinois. Mollys bloodline was 80% cloverleaf which gave her the most gentle tempormant. She was kind, easy to train and she was very much a one-master-dog. She was definately a full companion. One thing I learned about the physicals of the cloverleaf is they are not strong dogs. they are thin, and somewhat frail. Their ears hang very low and th |

Irish Setter: crate-phobia
|
Posted Date: 2000-07-14 10:12:00 By: diana
We have a 6 month old Setter pup who goes absolutley insane when he is in the crate. He scratches, bangs against the sides, does anything to get out! He drools like crazy, so when we let him out the pup and the crate are soaked. We make sure he is not in there more than 2 hours at a time. We have tried music, special treats saved only for the crate time, TV, bedding (he shreds whatever is put down...i even bought a heavy codura nylon pad guarenteed not to rip! It came off in big hunks that we found later in his stool!!), all to no avail. Leaving him out is not an option as he is in the chewing stage and cannot be trusted. Is there any magic potion or solution that has been met with success? Everything I have read and everyone I have talked to about crating has indicated that dogs love their crates and view them as their little "caves"....safe cozy havens. Is there something wrong with my pup? He is from a respected breeder, not a puppy mill or pet shop.Advice, please? Thanks! |
