Price

I would be interested to know the price of pure-bred Greater Swiss Mountain Dog puppies would be. Does anyone know?

I dont know if this is the average price or not. It was difficult to get ahold of most breeders I even find out about. Most were kinda rude to. Alot act like they dont even want to sell a dog. If you look hard though you can get lucky.

I too have been trying to find a Swiss Mountain Dog and get into breeding and have found most of the breeders I talked to very rude. Have you found a dog? If so, would you e-mail me privately at swisdog4me@aol.com with the breeders name?

I do hope that since you are paying more than average that your puppys parents also had more than the bare minimum pre-breeding health clearances (hips and elbows) and that you will get a hefty refund if something goes wrong down the road (dysplasia, entropian, etc).

*Most* Swissy breeders are honest and ethical, but there are just enough bad apples out there that you really must be very careful. Just as all puppies are not created equal, neither are all breeders.

In fact just recently I encountered one future "breeder" who is planning on breeding his bitch even though she is too aggressive for his wife to take for a walk in their own neighborhood! And why are they breeding this nasty bitch?? In his own words "because so many families want Swissies for pets"!!! I dont know about anyone else, but I definitely DONT want a puppy from a nasty dog!!!

Diane, you are probably finding most people to be rude, because you have not shown you really care about the dogs. How can either of you know that this is the breed for you, and that you want to start breeding these dogs, given that neither of you has met one? Most breeders are protective, because they care about the future of the breed. And if they are not protective, then those breeders dogs are not good enough for me.

To use a living animal, just to make some fun money, I dont know how you sleep with yourself at night...but oh well, I cant help you. What goes around comes around....

Good post. I am considering adding a swissy to my family.I want type and temperment, not some jerk breeding a dog with a poor temperment! I deal with a different breed and am sick of bad breeders convinces some layperson that they just purchased a nice breeding show quaily dog but only ask for a kick back out of the litter...these dogs I seen are of poor conformation and temperment...thus a nice flow of rescue dogs...I work with breed rescue for my breed.

I would like a swissy to show and only breed with the help of my breeder a dog that has type and temperment...if I even choose to breed, I may decide I dont want that risk. But my love is Obedience and agility trials...so you quaility breeders, if you could please email me...I dont mind being on a waiting list!

I must agree with Diane. I have found the majority of the breeders that I dealt with (the one we bought from to be the exception) to be real Snots! They assume out of the gate that not only do we not know anything about the breed, but that we are unable to learn, and that we are not the calibre of person that "deserves" to own such a beautiful animal. I understand protecting any and all living beings, especially something as wonderful as a devoted Swissy, but to be a real bitch about it?!?!

I will tell you that these are not cheap animals. Justifiably so, as it helps to deter abuse. I will say that mine was $1200, and worth every penny! I saw them range from $1200 to $1500. Never as high as $1800, but I was looking for a family companion.
