I have recently gathered information on the GSMDs and of course like all of you, I have become intrigued by this beautiful and yet wholesome breed. I would like very much to own one of these fine dogs in the near future. However, I wouldn't be able to purchase and give the required love to this kind of breed until I finish college which will be in two years. Until then I plan to research more about GSMD. Do you think it might be too soon to start talking to some breeders? I'm definitely willingly to take the time (since I have plenty of it)to find the right dog. |

I live in NYC in a good sized-apartment. I have an avid interest in rock climbing, hiking, camping, running, soccer, etc etc and general spend a lot of time outside. I am looking for an active, friendly, faithful, well-socialized breed (not a small dog please) and have always wondered if the Greater Swiss fits that category. If you have experience (breeders and owners), please advise! Thank you: maimok@yahoo.com |

I have a Chinook (Sled Dog) who is 17 months old. He is itching constantly. He has seen the vet, had hair scrapings taken and mange was ruled out. There are no marks on him that I can find. I am giving him Fatty Acid capsules but they only seem to help a little. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog: Found Swissy Houston Humane So
|
Posted Date: 2002-11-14 12:11:51 By: SuzyRoberts
On November 13,2002 I adopted a beautiful female Swissie, 33lbs. with all of her adult teeth. I contacted the previous owner(Clear Lake,TX) who said that she got the pup from a woman at Petsmart or Petco through "some kind of shelter" adoption.
This girl is precious!!! Is anyone missing a puppy? Her name is reportedly NOLA. She has classic markings-white streak up the head, all four boots with some spotting. She must have been spayed at the first (?) shelter because she was tatooed when she arrived at the Houston Humane Society.
I'm familiar with Swissies because my brother was going to buy a pup from a breeder in Kentucky but it was a false pregnancy. He shared his research with me. Also, I have met "Swissy Bob" in Victoria TX and another breeder from north of Houston(lady, don't remember her name). I have one large HHS dog (mixed) and a wonderful Golden Rescue. NOLA is a wonderful welcome addition. She wasn't planned but she is adapting beautifully. I just wanted to try to locate her breeder to let them know what happened. Also, any idea on age? The shelter said about 6mos. but I'm not sure.
Please email me at suzyhome@att.net
Thanks for any help or info!
I JUST COULD NOT BELIEVE SHE WAS IN A SHELTER? WHAT HAPPENED?????>? |

I consider myself a dog fancier, and a protector of the GSMD breed. It upsets me to see so many "gotta have one now!" messages on this board. Ive looked at at least 2 dozen other breed boards, and this epidemic is really only prevalent on the swissy board.
I know that many of you would make great swissy owners, but many of you wouldnt. Why? Because these are very high maintenance dogs, more than most people are willing to put up with. My male was 100% housetrained until 14 months of age. All 3 make a huge mess when eating or drinking, my kitchen carpet is mildewed from all the excess water. They shed constantly and I have tumbleweed hairballs all over my house.
But you know what?? I wouldnt trade them for anything, love them to death. Just please: LEARN EVERYTHING YOU CAN BEFORE YOU BUY!!!
I have known of many swissies that had to be put down, for aggression (requiring stitches) and for epilepsy. There are lots of great breeders out there, and some not s |

I have been disabled for 2 years at age 34. I have been researching and believe a Swissie would be a perfect help companion and work companion. Is there any program in place for adoption or training for such purpose? I was breeding dogs until it got too much, but my child is studing to be a vet and it would be awsom to get help from a dog and also help breed a fantastic dog. Please reply. |

I see a lot of posts here from people hopeful about getting a Swissy. I would encourage any prospective owner to get the facts about
the breed by either attending http://www.graterswiss.com and reading the articles and attending the forums. or joing the Swissy-L listserv
and asking questions. NO breed is to be entered into lightly, learn the facts. Swissies are a truly amazing and wonderful breed, in
my opinion. Learn the facts. This dog has size, has health issues, has training issues, and requires a certain type of handling, training, care, and persistance.
I
I havent seen many, if ANY, breeders respond to any post on this site. There is a reason for this. Casual and uninformed inquiries are not generally tolerated in
this breed. Reasearch breeders, meet breeders, decide what you want, be willing to wait. These are the keys to getting any breed you want. If you decide you have to
have one, kudos, its brilliant breed, and good luck in your endeavors.

I am very interested in getting involved with Swissys and would like information from breeders. I presently breed as a hobby and make a decent bit of "fun money" at something I enjoy doing. Right now I just breed Rotties and German Shepards, but after seeing the Animal Planet video on Swissys I knew that I had to get involved! I have had great success with my Rottie/GSD mixes and think that the Swissy would be a good genetic complement. Any input would be appreciated.

For the past few weeks, I have been courting a GSM breeder and seem to have finally won his/her confidence in obtaining the puppy. Throughout my extensive research and socialization with other GSM owners, I have learned a great deal more about the breed and feel like I am fairly well educated about the GSMs. Now, it is time to put the money forth and start building a relationship with my new puppy. The breeder seems to be wonderful and has been extremely cooperative in answering all of my questions and concerns. However, I have not put the price question to her yet because I didnt want to seem monetarily infatuated, which I am not. I would, however, like to know the general opinion of a fair price range for a show quality puppy that has a very good heritage. The owners I have spoken to have all paid approximately $1200 for their puppies, but they are not breeders and only own their one dog. Any information you might provide would be extremely appreciated so I have an idea of how |

Hello,
I live in No Cal, and I have been researching several different breeds to learn about the best dog for me. I started with some smaller breeds and have now moved on to a
GSMD. Animal Planet has a show called "Breed All About It"
After the one on the Swissy I was hooked. I have been to numerous websites and read all info I could find. I have read about Bloat, eyes, hips, legs, coats and dispositions etc. I have a house with a fenced front and rear yard. I am home a lot. When I do go out on inspections I can take my dog with me. Our dog would be raised by 2 women. We do have a 9yr old cat. We have the time and love to give to a GSMD. I know there are pros and cons to any breed. I have looked at so many and so few have actually given me the "Thats the dog I want feeling" as the Swissy does.
Thanks for your reply. Any info would be appreciated. |

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog: so you want a swissy?
(9 Responses)
|
Posted Date: 2000-02-06 11:35:00 By: swissy advocate
So you say you want a swissy...
Did you know most are not housetrained until they are 10+ months old?
Do you know what bloat is? Its a life threatening condition that kills 5-10% of the breed.
Do you know what OCD is?
Do you know about canine epilepsy? It runs thru many lines, and a breeder may not tell you about it.
Do you know thats its a myth that they dont shed? Come look at my house and the hairballs.
Did you know some swissy owners have had to put their dogs down for aggression?
Did you know most swissy owners wait more than a year for their dog?
So unless youre prepared for all of this, Id suggest you find another breed. |
