Great Pyrenees: Death of our Two year old PWD
|
Posted Date: 2003-04-06 20:44:28 By: fulton
In May of 2001 we purchased our PWD. He was such a great addition to our family. Sadly he passed away suddenly for unknown reasons. On a Monday he was treated for an ear infection. We were given an ontiment and an oral antibiotic(Trimethoprim Sulfa 960mg). The vet also gave him a six month heart worm shot. By Thursday he was ill and had gotten very weak. We called the vet and they said to stop the medicine and bring him in if he was not feeling better by Friday. After only three pills he died. An autopsy was done at Cornell University and as of today they have not determined a cause of death. They are still waiting for the pathology test results. The report did indicate that his heart had no problem signs(they did note that it seemed small), there were no blood clots, and no problems with his stomach, no cancer . I am wondering if anyone has experienced a problem with this antibiotic. The vet mentioned that she thought he could have had an arrhythmia. I would appreciate any information or thought anyone might have. We are so very sad for our great pal Max. Thank you. bjk |

Help!!! How do I get my pup (9 months old) to stop mouthing. He is such a great dog, but I can't get him to stop putting his mouth on us. He has been to obedience training and does great with everything except mouthing. I have tried everything from keeping him on a lease and training collar to putting apple bitters on everyones hands, pants, etc. If I can only teach him not to do this, he will be a great pet!!! Thanks for any help anyone can offer. |

Great Pyrenees: puppy for the old people

Hi: I hate to post this on a message board, but Im having some bad luck. I do pet assisted therapy with old people at a skilled nursing facility. In January we lost our beloved dog of eight years and we need a puppy desperately. No one realizes how important the animals are to the old folks. Were asking for a puppy to be donated in the name of the home. In return we will offer articles in local papers and possibly LA media attention. We will also give a donation letter to be filed with the breeders income tax. I know breeding is a business, but my old people need a puppy and we hope someone can help. Please eMail me at boomer_dude@yahoo.com Thanks |

I have a 5 yr old Great Pyr. She just had another litter. It is our first for us. What age would be best to stop having litters for her health. She is healthy and did not realise she was in heat when we brought her home 2+mos ago. Haha. The daddy is a Pyr/St. Bernard mix. Any info would be appreciated.

Great Pyrenees: purchase an older guard animal?

I am considering purchasing a great pyr to guard a herd of 15-20 goats. I have never had a guardian animal before, but because the herd has grown am considering one. The one I am looking at is about 6 months to 1 year old, raised with goats. Has anyone had any experience with moving a guard animal from one herd to another? Any dos or donts? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance. |

I am looking for a Pyrenees as a family pet and guardian on a 20 acre farm I just recently purchased. I have 2 and 4 year old children. I will consider an older dog if you know of someone looking for a good home and the dog has been socialized with children.
I owned a Pyrenees from 10 weeks to 3 years but lost him following the Northridge Earthquake and reconstruction of my home.
I need a large dog (140+) due to a problem with coyote packs, bobcats, and mountain lions that frequent the area. Primarily the problem I am having on my property (so far) is with coyote packs and large domestic dogs running wild (I guess the small dogs dont live too long if theyre running wild). My lab pupps must be kept in an enclosed pen by the front door until they are much larger. They can only come out to play when someone is watching them closely.
I have managed to fence and landscape about 1 acre of land surrounding my house and I believe that would now be adequate for a Pyr |

Great Pyrenees: BARKING
|
Posted Date: 2000-04-29 00:00:00 By: MARY
I HAVE BEEN READING UP ON DIFFERENT DOG BREEDS FOR OVER A YEAR NOW TRYING TO DECIDE WHAT BREED IS BEST FOR OUR FAMILY. I TEND TO LEAN TOWARDS THE LARGER DOGS AND THE GREAT PYRENEES IS ONE OF MY VERY FAVORITES. I LIKE THAT THEY ARE GOOD PROTECTORS AND LOVE TO BE INSIDE WITH THE FAMILY. BUT I ONLY HAVE ONE CONSERN ABOUT THE BREED AND THAT IS THE BARKING. I HAVE TALKED TO SOME BREEDERS AND READ THAT THEY CAN BARK AT EVERYTHING. MY NEIGHBORS MAY NOT LIKE IT IF THEY KEEP BARKING AT THEM EVEN AFTER THEY SHOULD KNOW WHO THEY ARE. SO MY QUESTION IS DO THEY KEEP BARKING AT THE SAME PEOPLE OR JUST TILL THEY GET USE TO THEM? I DO PLAN ON KEEPING THE DOG IN WITH US BUT OF COURSE THEY WILL NEED AND WANT OUT SOMETIMES AND DO NOT WANT TO BOTHER MY NEIGHBORS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP! MARY |

OK...I need some advice....last year Pepsi had her first litter....I thought I had been very careful in selecting good homes for all my pups...unfortunately I may have been wrong...my neighbors brother bought one of the pups from me and recently his home burned down and he came to stay at his brothers home....first of all he didnt show up with the dog who is a little over a year old now...I thought soemt hing had happeend to her and I asked about her...I was told she was "guarding" the house....later that evening my neighbor asked if I would go with him to the house to get the dog...he also forwarned me that he thought there was something wrong with her....I went with him and found a thin dog with hotspots on her body and ticks and fleas ...she hadnt been given a bath since I sold her last year and she was running around in the burnt out house so she had a somkey smell to her....I brought her home and have had her ever since...I gave her a bath, have given her some antibiotics, |

Find A well educated groomer( one thats not going to leave your dog in A drying box all day) that knows how to manage your dogs coat properly. As a prof. groomer I find these are one of my top 5 breeds that dont get enough reg.( every 10 tp 12 weeks) grooming. People are busy at home and dont have time to do it and if they are, sometimes they dont do it properly. Especially in hot weather they need to be comb out so that they dont overheat. Im sure you know that though. Well get some good referals and good luck! |

I am looking for a Pyrenes puppy preferable male, we just lost our companion due to a car accident. We live in Western Wisconsin. I am not looking for an animal that necessarily has papers and registered and of champion quality. I am looking for a companion for our family and a guardian for my horses. We have three children ages 7, 4 and 21 months. Hawkeye will never be able to be replaced but we have a terrible void without him in our lives. If anyone can give us any info it would be greatly appreciated. We are willing to look into a rescue dog, and can drive to get the puppy or other age within reason. Please help. Thank you so much for your time.
