Golden Retriever: puppy strangles
|
Posted Date: 2008-06-10 21:56:03 By: Tammy
Hi,
My 7 week old golden was just diagnosed with puppy strangles. He is now 9 weeks old and he has sores mostly on his nose and few around his eyes. He has been on prednisone and an antibiotic for about 1.5 weeks. He is responding well. We soak him in an antibacterial bath the vet told us about and it seems to help.
My question is how is your dog doing? Did it leave any scarring? If so, how bad? And about how long was your puppy on medication? I would love to hear from you.

I got a puppy recently and have been feeding Solid Gxxx Puppy food for my puppy. However, my vet has been recommending me to feed him Hill's Science Dxxx Large Breed Puppy food instead (since goldens grow slower than the small breed dogs, their calcium intake should be adjusted accordingly). But I have read that Hill's has corn meal, chicken by-product meal and BHA, so I am hesitant to switch to Hill's. What should I do? |

I've some very conflicting stories on giving Heartworm meds to Goldens. I've heard some vets say don't give it at all, since it can be treated. Some say give it only during the warm season. And now I've just heard that it should be given year round. What's the deal??? Kathie |

Our two and a half year old Golden Female was bred for the first time last week. She was bred four times, every other day. Now, she acts like it is uncomfortable to walk, she seems unlike her normal, playful self and recently cried when we brushed her near her genitals (something she has never done before). Please help. |

This is a very difficult thing for me to do. I’m not used to asking for help from anyone. However, I don’t have a choice. 5 months ago, my wife and I bought a beautiful Golden Retriever pup named Sedona. She was just 6 weeks old and quickly became a part of our family. We love her more than we could have ever imagined. A few weeks ago, she started limping. After taking her to the vet, getting X-rays and second opinions, the result is that she has been diagnosed with osteochondrosis dissecans of the humerus head. This is a degenerative disease and requires surgery. The surgery costs $6000, which is not an amount we can come up with right now. The surgery needs to be done quickly, or we may not have a choice but to put her down. This is unthinkable to both of us. So we are put in the unfortunate position of asking for help. If you can find it in your heart to contribute a small amount to help save Sedona’s life, we would be forever grateful. Any donations we receive above and beyond the cost of the surgery will be returned. Thank you in advance for anything you can do.

I have a 1 y/o Golden who has more blond than red fur. I was just wondering if anyone knows why this would be and/or how common it is. She is WKC registered and all of her litter looked like normal Golden's...We actually picked her because of her color. She is smaller than average as well (I think she was the runt)...could it just be a recessive gene? She is just the sweetest little thing...Thanks for any input! |

Hi all,
I have a beloved 12 year old black lab named Guinness. He has
recently begun to struggle with arthritis in his back legs and he
already was suffering from the beginnings of congestive heart
failure. Recently however, a friend of mine turned me on to a new
nutritional supplement for dogs called Canine Health Formula. It is
a specific blend of fatty acids known for its antiinflammatory and
heart protecting effects. Since I have started Guinness on this
daily supplement he has been like a new dog. I can't remember the
last time he was able to walk without a limp, and he never seems to
labor anymore. I asked my vet about it and he wholeheartedly
supported my decision to start him on this. Nonetheless, I just
wanted to pass this info along to my fellow dog owners. I definitely
think it is worth a try. Also...my friend actually told me that the
reason he was using it in the first place is the effect it has on
stopping itching from allergies. I don't know much about this
because, luckily, my dog never suffered from them. I ordered mine
off of the website. I will provide the link for any that think that
it may be of help to their dog.

I've been considering a pup from a breeder and want to be sure I'm getting the proper paperwork. Can someone help me? If a breeder shows me a vets report on hip condition (not a OFC clearance) is this acceptable? Is a vets rating of fair an ok rating on the hips? Also how should a contract be worded on the health guarantee? These may not be easy questions to answer but any help or direction is appreciated. I want to make the right choice. I have other questions , but I'll start here. |

I am looking to surprise my husband with a golden, he had two growing up and about 2 years ago his childhood golden died with their 2 other dogs in a house fire while everyone was away at the airport picking up his dad. My husband was in DC at the time and I don't think he has ever really recovered from the loss. I can see it in his eyes when we see one in the pet store or on the street. I'd like to surprise my husband with a golden before he is shipped off. Please email me if you know of anyone who can help. We are currently stationed at Ft. Benning, GA right on the AL and GA stateline, but will be moving in a few months to Ft. Campbell, KY and on the stateline of KY and TN. Thanks |

I must inform you that my dog, her name is Pinky, she is a 4 year old female and she is spoiled rotten. Last night, my mom was in our den, I'd just left and was getting ready for bed when, my mom started yelling for my dad and so, my dad and I ran in there and she told us that Pinky had just started flipping over for no reason. She's never done this before. Right before I ran in there, I heard a big thump. My mom earlier this morning told me that that thump was Pinky flipping over. Please help me because I love my dog more than anything and I need to know if something's wrong and if I need to take her to the vet. Thanks! |

We have 4 goldens and love them all to death. They are spoiled rotten. Our youngest male has become increasingly more aggresive as he matures. Certain times I understand such as when one of our females was in heat and when she was close to delivery. We have tried confining him away from the other dogs and this seems to work for a time and they are fine then it is back to same thing. I have been bitten twice and have never experienced this with Goldens. I have had them all my life. I am hoping this is just Alpha dog syndrome and getting him fixed will take care of this. We were not planning on breeding him do to allergies so this seems like the logical next step he is only 15 months and sweet most of the time as well as hyper but that I can live with attacking my other dogs I cannot. He has been with the other dogs since birth as he is one of ours from our first litter so not sure were the agression is coming from. |

Dear friend
I have a genuine doubt about rabies. I would like to know whether the dog, which has vaccinated antirabby, is safe from rabies. Some of the doctors told me we have to vaccinate again if the dog is bitten by a rabid animal. If it is so what is the use of antirabby vaccine.
Is the rabies is originated from the body of dogs itself, without contact of rabid animal, bats, or raccoons.
Some people say if vaccinated a dog antirabby, it will not show the symptoms of rabies though its affected rabies. Is it true?
Please reply

I never knew I could hurt so much :( But I am ok.. :) We got Maggie and I love her to death!!! but.. She is bad hehe.. She is house broken, can sit and lay down even give paw. She listens to "no" sometimes. We are trying desperatly to get her to stop juming. Overall she is really good...she doesn't really chew or shread anything... she just grabs and runs.. but with "no no" things... we have yelled, punished, tried rewarding for good behavior, but she will the second after run right back to the "no no" and grab it again. that I can deal with for the most part. Right now its the jumping and puppy biting that scares me.. I have a year old neice that is walking around and loves the puppy too.. I just don't want her hurt.. if anyone can give us any help and suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.. I'm sorry this was soo long!!!

Golden Retriever: LITTER OF GOLDENS BRED BY VETS
(1 Responses)
|
Posted Date: 2002-11-10 12:02:40 By: goldendoctor
11 pups were born 10/27/02 - 8 females and 3 males.
Our dog, Pesto, was bred with Taxi, our show dog male. They will be
ready to go home in mid-December (14th approximately), 2002. Taxi (the
lighter dog) is the pick of the litter and son of one of the most
famous champion show dogs of the past 10 years. Pesto is the darker
dog, and her mother (Basil) lives with us too. Pesto was the pick of
the litter from Basil's first and only litter.
The puppies' Mom, Dad, Grandma, and Uncle are members of our family and
live with us in our home in northern Delaware. We are not a kennel.
We are 2 veterinarians with 4 goldens in our family.
All puppies will have been examined by 2 veterinarians (my wife and I), dewormed and had their first shots.
Both parents have had Hip, Elbow, Eye, Heart, Thyroid, and other laboratory test clearances. This is more than I can say most breeders
perform. You get what you pay for - cheaper dogs with greater potential for problems come from cheap, uneducated, unhealthy breeders. Grandparents have had health clearances checked also. Our dogs are
healthy lovable family pets.

Posted Date: 2002-11-08 01:21:43 By: goldenluv
hi,i am new to this boardand just wanted to say hi and tell a little about myself.i came to this board for serious golden advice and give advice.i am a parent to a 10 month old golden retreiver male&2 kids&a guinea pig.my family has always had goldens, and now blessed with a wonderful golden.i am currently joinig a golden club in my area and furiously love the breed and will stand up for the rights of one!i do not accept byb(backyard breeders)puppymills,or pet shop puppies.i am not a expert on the golden retreiver and will not act like i am but i have done tons of research on the breed, and there are wonderful websites out there that caution before you buy a golden.i would name them but i am not here to advertise them.just be cautious if you are planning on buying a golden, research very thoughly, and research the breeder and they should do the same for you.i am very strongly opionatited on the breeding of goldens which has gone way out of hand.please do not buy from a byb or a irresponsible one.thereare many heartbreaking stories on goldens breed unethlicly!and be cautious of advertisers trying to sell goldens on the boards.responsible breeders usally do not advertise their puppies on boards but i may be wrong so i will not judge.if you are wanting a golden and it is the right breed for you,try golden rescue groups.i am sorry if this offends anyone.i am just saying hi and willing to answer questions and get advice myself.thank you!

Golden Retriever: missing golden in New Mexico
|
Posted Date: 2002-10-25 17:56:16 By: dogcrazygin
We were contacted by a woman whose daughter-in-law was in a car accident this
morning between Logan and Sanjon in New Mexico. Her car rolled four times and
the door was torn off. She was taken to the hospital but is doing very well.
However, her Golden is missing from the car. I called and spoke to the New
Mexico State Police and the city of Logan police. Everyone there is being so
helpful! The ambulance crew actually went back to the scene of the accident
after dropping off the woman at the hospital to see whether they could locate
Rascal. They could not. She has been spotted running down the highway but ran
from the people trying to capture her. We'd like to get the word out about
Rascal so that anyone in the area who spots her can let her owners know. They
are just frantic about her. She's 18 months old, medium gold in color, and is
wearing a red collar with her name and phone number on it. Her owner's name is
Andrew Kauffman and his phone number is 505-784-9396 - home and his cell phone
is 505-693-6201. If anyone from New Mexico happens to spot poor Rascal, please
let him know. I'm sure his wife will recuperate much quicker knowing her dog
is safe!

Hi there!
Zeli is a spayed 7 year old female who seeems to have trouble rising up off hips... never has before....
I am giving her baby aspirin (2) per day before putting her through xrays etc.....
Seems young for arthritis and also is it possible for hip displasia (shudder)?
We see vet next month for routing check but I don't want her unnecessarily fooled with. I love her, she is the best darned dog on this earth.
Yes,she can still hop up on our bed... no problem there.
hmmmmm

Golden Retriever: puppy strangles

Has anyone had pups with this disease? It is also known as Juvenile Cellulitis. I would be very interested in finding out, what exactly causes this disease, and also if its inher. My 8 week old golden retriever puppy had just been dias. with it. He is on prednisolone and cephalexin every 12 hours. He was also given a shot of Dexamethasone. He is improving and its now 4 days later. If anyone knows of any pups who had this , could you let me know? I want to find out if possible, just about how many golden retreiver pups have had it, and if they did, how are they doing now. |
Golden Retriever: osteosarcoma

Our beloved Rocky has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma...we had his left front leg amputated day before yesterday to help ease his pain. Prognosis is not good..six months at the most. Has anyone experienced this illness before. What are some of the signs that his quality of life may be diminished? Are there any other complications that we should expect? |
Golden Retriever: possible seizures
|
Posted Date: 2002-07-07 21:13:34 By: Lamere97
We just acquired a beautiful light golden on Fri July 5...she is 8 wks old. She is exhibiting a strange behavior. She puts her head all the way back...her muzzle practically is touching her back as she does this. She holds it there for about a minute and then sometimes goes back to the position briefly. The vet thought it might be a seizure of the petit mal type. She has done it at least 8 times since we got her 48 hrs ago. To imagine the scenario, imagine she is looking at you head-on...then she tilts her head all the way back and all you can see is her neck..her head is upside down..on top of her spine. Has anyone seen this position in a golden? Does it sound abnormal, as if it's a seizure? She does it as she is lying down, and then does sleep afterwards. Before it happens, she has been crying and barking and then just as she calms down, it happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks from Debbie in St Louis, MO |
