Golden Retriever: Golden retriever with a small black patch of fur on hip

I have a male and female golden with papers who had 11 pups 6 mos ago. I now have someone claiming that one of the pups that he bought from me has a black patch of fur on it's hip. He is claiming that that means that the pup is a mixed breed. He thinks that another dog bred my female. I really don't think so. Does anybody know if this can happen even if both parents are truly goldens? I have read that it is a fault in the line, but that the puppy would still be golden. If anyone has more info on this I would love th hear from you.

Golden Retriever: puppy strangles
|
Posted Date: 2008-06-10 21:56:03 By: Tammy
Hi,
My 7 week old golden was just diagnosed with puppy strangles. He is now 9 weeks old and he has sores mostly on his nose and few around his eyes. He has been on prednisone and an antibiotic for about 1.5 weeks. He is responding well. We soak him in an antibacterial bath the vet told us about and it seems to help.
My question is how is your dog doing? Did it leave any scarring? If so, how bad? And about how long was your puppy on medication? I would love to hear from you.

I got a puppy recently and have been feeding Solid Gxxx Puppy food for my puppy. However, my vet has been recommending me to feed him Hill's Science Dxxx Large Breed Puppy food instead (since goldens grow slower than the small breed dogs, their calcium intake should be adjusted accordingly). But I have read that Hill's has corn meal, chicken by-product meal and BHA, so I am hesitant to switch to Hill's. What should I do? |

I've some very conflicting stories on giving Heartworm meds to Goldens. I've heard some vets say don't give it at all, since it can be treated. Some say give it only during the warm season. And now I've just heard that it should be given year round. What's the deal??? Kathie |

Our two and a half year old Golden Female was bred for the first time last week. She was bred four times, every other day. Now, she acts like it is uncomfortable to walk, she seems unlike her normal, playful self and recently cried when we brushed her near her genitals (something she has never done before). Please help. |

This is a very difficult thing for me to do. I’m not used to asking for help from anyone. However, I don’t have a choice. 5 months ago, my wife and I bought a beautiful Golden Retriever pup named Sedona. She was just 6 weeks old and quickly became a part of our family. We love her more than we could have ever imagined. A few weeks ago, she started limping. After taking her to the vet, getting X-rays and second opinions, the result is that she has been diagnosed with osteochondrosis dissecans of the humerus head. This is a degenerative disease and requires surgery. The surgery costs $6000, which is not an amount we can come up with right now. The surgery needs to be done quickly, or we may not have a choice but to put her down. This is unthinkable to both of us. So we are put in the unfortunate position of asking for help. If you can find it in your heart to contribute a small amount to help save Sedona’s life, we would be forever grateful. Any donations we receive above and beyond the cost of the surgery will be returned. Thank you in advance for anything you can do.

I have a 1 y/o Golden who has more blond than red fur. I was just wondering if anyone knows why this would be and/or how common it is. She is WKC registered and all of her litter looked like normal Golden's...We actually picked her because of her color. She is smaller than average as well (I think she was the runt)...could it just be a recessive gene? She is just the sweetest little thing...Thanks for any input! |

Hi all,
I have a beloved 12 year old black lab named Guinness. He has
recently begun to struggle with arthritis in his back legs and he
already was suffering from the beginnings of congestive heart
failure. Recently however, a friend of mine turned me on to a new
nutritional supplement for dogs called Canine Health Formula. It is
a specific blend of fatty acids known for its antiinflammatory and
heart protecting effects. Since I have started Guinness on this
daily supplement he has been like a new dog. I can't remember the
last time he was able to walk without a limp, and he never seems to
labor anymore. I asked my vet about it and he wholeheartedly
supported my decision to start him on this. Nonetheless, I just
wanted to pass this info along to my fellow dog owners. I definitely
think it is worth a try. Also...my friend actually told me that the
reason he was using it in the first place is the effect it has on
stopping itching from allergies. I don't know much about this
because, luckily, my dog never suffered from them. I ordered mine
off of the website. I will provide the link for any that think that
it may be of help to their dog.

Golden Retriever: Buying a Golden Pup

I've been considering a pup from a breeder and want to be sure I'm getting the proper paperwork. Can someone help me? If a breeder shows me a vets report on hip condition (not a OFC clearance) is this acceptable? Is a vets rating of fair an ok rating on the hips? Also how should a contract be worded on the health guarantee? These may not be easy questions to answer but any help or direction is appreciated. I want to make the right choice. I have other questions , but I'll start here. |

Golden Retriever: A puppy for my husband

I am looking to surprise my husband with a golden, he had two growing up and about 2 years ago his childhood golden died with their 2 other dogs in a house fire while everyone was away at the airport picking up his dad. My husband was in DC at the time and I don't think he has ever really recovered from the loss. I can see it in his eyes when we see one in the pet store or on the street. I'd like to surprise my husband with a golden before he is shipped off. Please email me if you know of anyone who can help. We are currently stationed at Ft. Benning, GA right on the AL and GA stateline, but will be moving in a few months to Ft. Campbell, KY and on the stateline of KY and TN. Thanks |

I must inform you that my dog, her name is Pinky, she is a 4 year old female and she is spoiled rotten. Last night, my mom was in our den, I'd just left and was getting ready for bed when, my mom started yelling for my dad and so, my dad and I ran in there and she told us that Pinky had just started flipping over for no reason. She's never done this before. Right before I ran in there, I heard a big thump. My mom earlier this morning told me that that thump was Pinky flipping over. Please help me because I love my dog more than anything and I need to know if something's wrong and if I need to take her to the vet. Thanks! |

We have 4 goldens and love them all to death. They are spoiled rotten. Our youngest male has become increasingly more aggresive as he matures. Certain times I understand such as when one of our females was in heat and when she was close to delivery. We have tried confining him away from the other dogs and this seems to work for a time and they are fine then it is back to same thing. I have been bitten twice and have never experienced this with Goldens. I have had them all my life. I am hoping this is just Alpha dog syndrome and getting him fixed will take care of this. We were not planning on breeding him do to allergies so this seems like the logical next step he is only 15 months and sweet most of the time as well as hyper but that I can live with attacking my other dogs I cannot. He has been with the other dogs since birth as he is one of ours from our first litter so not sure were the agression is coming from. |

Dear friend
I have a genuine doubt about rabies. I would like to know whether the dog, which has vaccinated antirabby, is safe from rabies. Some of the doctors told me we have to vaccinate again if the dog is bitten by a rabid animal. If it is so what is the use of antirabby vaccine.
Is the rabies is originated from the body of dogs itself, without contact of rabid animal, bats, or raccoons.
Some people say if vaccinated a dog antirabby, it will not show the symptoms of rabies though its affected rabies. Is it true?
Please reply

ok.. first I am new here!! I want to say hi!! And that I love goldens!! I am soon to be 21 y/o with my families second golden. Our first golden passed away in Oct. I never knew I could hurt so much :( But I am ok.. :) We got Maggie and I love her to death!!! but.. She is bad hehe.. She is house broken, can sit and lay down even give paw. She listens to "no" sometimes. We are trying desperatly to get her to stop juming. Overall she is really good...she doesn't really chew or shread anything... she just grabs and runs.. but with "no no" things... we have yelled, punished, tried rewarding for good behavior, but she will the second after run right back to the "no no" and grab it again. that I can deal with for the most part. Right now its the jumping and puppy biting that scares me.. I have a year old neice that is walking around and loves the puppy too.. I just don't want her hurt.. if anyone can give us any help and suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.. I'm sorry this was soo long!!!

We have an 11 week old male golden and for the past few weeks he become very scary and aggressive when we try to take certain things out of his mouth that are a no-no. It has occurred on three incidents, once with a sock and twice with paper napkins. I have a bite on my hand from the last one. He doesn't act this way around any of his toys or his food. We can take those away with no problem. We are very worried about this. Please help! (we start obedience class jan. 13th) |
