Soft Stools

I have a year old GSD. He has really soft stools - almost diarrhea. He eats dry food with a little canned food mixed in. He is growing and appears to feel fine. It gets better for awhile and then it gets worse. Any ideas? The vet checked his stools at 6 months - nothing showed up.
