We have a 4 month old female GSD. This is the first dog I have ever had. My husband grew up with dogs. This is a new experience for me. Here's what I learned about being a GSD owner:
1) It takes large amounts of patience - We have a GSD working breed which has TONS of energy. She is going to be a handful to train, but she is highly intelligent and very trainable.
2) Those puppy teeth are like razors! - You'll be counting the days until they fall out.
3) We don't have any children yet but from what I have researched and heard, they are EXCELLENT and very protective of children.
4) Did I mention patience???
5) Take time for puppy kindergarten, intermediate and advanced traiing courses. We are almost half way through our course and it has done wonders.
6) Above all, CRATE TRAIN YOUR PUP!!!!
7) We haven't experienced this yet, but we are close: GSDs have to be brushed at least once a day. They shed 365 days a year!
I hope this helps! You will absolutely love your GSD. They are by far the most incredible, intelligent, loyal, fun, not to mention attractive, and rewarding pets. |
