Our 11 year old GSD recently developed a runny nose. It is isolated to the left side and comes with sneezing. His nose runs all the time. Has a yellow tint and large volume. He has been checked by the vet for a foreign object on that side and xrayed for a tumor. Any thoughts would be appreciated. |

German Shepherd Dog: Full of questions!

Hello!
Lexi, Ruben and I are new here, but this looked like a great place to ask some questions!
Let me give you a little background on the dogs so you understand why I am asking! Lexi was my first dog, and she would bend over backwards to please humans. Ruben on the other hand is my second dog, and training him is really a challenge for me. He is crate trained, and potty trained (6 mo). But, we are having a lot of problems with him barking, and whining when he wants something. Usually what I do is put a toy in the cage, and then ignore him until he is quiet. But, even with this treatment, the barking is getting louder, and louder. Soooo, what should I try next? We have been doing the above treatment since July. I almost think he just doesn't like to ever be away from us. Even ouside, he sticks to your side :), but, I know THAT is not a bad thing!
I am also wondering, I saw someone on the boards asked about ears awhile back. Ruben does have one ear that stands up great. The other one has a curvy tip, and at other times doesn't stand up at all, and my husband can't stand it. Personally, I think it is cute. It did go through a stage where it stood up pretty good most of the time. WHy would that change, and what can I do about it? Any help would be much appreciated on both things! Thanks so mcuh!

German Shepherd Dog: Extremely over protective
|
Posted Date: 2003-09-21 19:47:46 By: CaseyK76
I have a 9 month female (spayed) puppy named Shilo, her protection drive is a little extreme. She has been socialized since she was 6 weeks old, with other people and dogs. We have two other dogs also who she gets along with great, shows no agression what so ever towards the other dogs. She is wonderful with my children but when we walk her she goes ballistic if there is a strange person or dog. It has gotten so bad we had to get a pinch collar just so I could walk her. She weighs 65lbs already. I know they are suppose to very proctective of members in their "pack" but wow. I tried to introduce her to my neighbor and then her dog, and she went nuts barking (never once left my side) it went on for like ten minutes. At first I thought she was afraid but she showed no signs of being afraid. She was not going to quit letting them know to stay away from me. She has never shown any agression towards anyone in the family, she displays all the submissive behavior towards us. I do feel safe with her but I don't want people to be afraid of her because she is a very sweet loving dog. She is okay with people inside the house. Does anyone have any suggestions on this? |

My puppy will be 8 months old on the 5th of next month and her ears will not stay up all of the time. As a matter of fact they will only stay up when she is excited, investigating something or is playing. Some of you on this message board have replied to similar post about ears that if their puppies ears hadn't stayed up by 7 mo.'s to post. That there were things that could be tried. Well I'm past that point and would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance for anyone trying to help! |

I have a 10 month old GSD and she is the best dog in the entire universe. She doesn't chew, dig, or have accidents. The only problem that we had with her was a problem with diahhera and vomiting. Cocoa had diahhera all the time, and every couple of days she would vomit this yellow stuff that almost looked like urine. After speaking with another GSd owner I found out that the breed can be prone to having a sensitive stomach, and decided to switch her to an all natural dog food, and her problems all disappeared. She was on Iams. Even though your vet may recommend Iams or Eukenuba there is even better dog food for you dog (and cats) Go on the web and enter All-natural dog food into a search engine, and see what response you get. I do not sell any particular kind. I do recommend everyone researching dog food to see what is in it, you may be surprised as well as grossed out by it. |

German Shepherd Dog: Need some info: just adopted
(1 Responses)
|
Posted Date: 2003-08-15 11:54:58 By: MrsMercer
My husband and I just adopted an approx. 2 y/o GSD three days ago. We already had a sweet Golden Retriever but just fell in love with this GSD! We got her for free, she was staying with a lady who shows her dogs with the AKC (the champion GSD was even there!)and she said that our new dog could have been a show dog and she thinks that someone stole her and then dropped her off. Then, we took her to the vet and she got a clean bill of health, but the vet said that he thinks that someone was beating her because of the way she ducks her head when we pet it. She is an extreamly sweet girl; what should we do to help her to trust us and know that we will love her? She seems to like me, but she is a bit afraid of my husband (who is so kind to her!), I think just because he is a man and has a different voice. She also barks a lot, always wants to look out the windows, and tries to sleep in our bed every night. Any advice or information would be appreciated! Thanks! :-) |
German Shepherd Dog: Thought this may help someone

Hi all,
I have a beloved 12 year old German Shepard named Guinness. He has
recently begun to struggle with arthritis in his back legs and he
already was suffering from the beginnings of congestive heart
failure. Recently however, a friend of mine turned me on to a new
nutritional supplement for dogs called Canine Health Formula. It is
a specific blend of fatty acids known for its antiinflammatory and
heart protecting effects. Since I have started Guinness on this
daily supplement he has been like a new dog. I can't remember the
last time he was able to walk without a limp, and he never seems to
labor anymore. I asked my vet about it and he wholeheartedly
supported my decision to start him on this. Nonetheless, I just
wanted to pass this info along to my fellow dog owners. I definitely
think it is worth a try. Also...my friend actually told me that the
reason he was using it in the first place is the effect it has on
stopping itching from allergies. I don't know much about this
because, luckily, my dog never suffered from them. I ordered mine
off of the website. I will provide the link for any that think that
it may be of help to their dog.

My 11 month old german shepherd recently started barking aggressively (it almost seems like he will bite) when strangers approach us. He is very intimidating when he does this. I've taken him to obedience class and he behaves very well except for when strangers are around. He will not respond to any commands when he starts. Has anyone experienced this with their dog? Is it a phase that will be outgrown? Any suggestions? My dog generally is very friendly , affectionate and 'sucky'. |
German Shepherd Dog: Dwarf Gene?
|
Posted Date: 2003-07-30 00:11:00 By: Marleysmom
I have a mixed breed dog and I am trying to figure out what breeds she is. I was told that she is GS/Chow Chow. I know that she is part chow because her tongue is mostly black. As a puppy she looked just like a GS, but as she got older her colors changed and her body began to lengthen, but she didn't get very tall (about 17 in. from paw to shoulder blade). I read in a book that there is something called a dwarf gene in some GS and/or GS mixes. Has anyone heard of this? The book had no further details on it. |
