The acceptable colors for English Springer Spaniels are: liver/white, black/white, white/liver, white/black, liver/tan/white, black/tan white. I have seen English Springers that were lemon, sable, and red. These colors are show disqualifications and should not be bred. However, there is nothing wrong with them as pets. Sometimes when I am talking to people about puppies, I will occassionally use brown for liver, as they do not know what color liver is.
If all of the appropriate health checks are done on the sire, dam and puppies I would not worry too much about the color for a pet. To learn more about the health checks, please visit the English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association (ESSFTA) web page. The ESSFTA is the parent club for both the show and field bred Springer. Their site is located at www.essfta.org Please read the Spaniel Manual. It goes into what you should expect form a breeder. |
