I am a dobie owner for the first time, I am looking for advice on if obedience classes are a must for this breed or if most train them on there own. I have another dog who is well trained without any classes. But my puppy bites constantly and isnt potty training very well.

You should not have gotten a Doberman Pinscher with out knowing if they need training or not! Hello.. every dog needs training. Some dogs need more training than others..such as the Doberman. I am a Doberman lover and it really irks me that people buy dogs with out any idea what they are buying. Dobermans are wonderful dogs. BUT- they do need proper socialization and obedience training. Your dog should be potty trained with no problem. If your puppy is pottying in the house it's your fault. It's as simple as this: put your pup in a crate at night to sleep (with toys and rawhide chews), when your puppy wakes up and cries that means the pup has to go out, so carry the pup out(if you think about it, dogs are really smart, they wont pee in their bed). If you don't have a crate, you should buy one. If you can't afford one, you should have thought about that before you got the dog. But you didn't think about everything that goes along with getting a dog, did you? In the day time let the pup out OFTEN. That means after eating, drinking, sleeping, and before and after playing. Just let the dog out often and always praise the puppy when it goes outside.

Dobe17 Calm Down, What\'s your problem? I just had to let my great grand puppy get put to rest and i did not find anything wrong with that question. Nala 23 just be patient aand loving and remember you are the \"alpha dog\". Missing my Big Boo boo.

Hi Nala 23. I also found the answer by Dobe 17 harsh for the question,you just want to learn and that is the right idea! Dobes are extremely smart and the do catch on very fast,profesional training is advisable if you never had one before,they do like to take over and be \"Alpha\",it is up to you to let them know who is Boss (gently they are very sensitive) Dobermans are wonderful dogs.I love them so!... But if your finances do not allow you,Jaguar fan answer was appropiated,also you mention an older traied dog at home,take or let them out together,the puppy will imitated quite soon. Also how did your train the first dog? BE CONSISTANT>>> Good Luck. PS;Some else in the board wrote something about bitting, it sounded good to me.
