You said she went under the bed and then bit you? If you were trying to get her while under the bed when she bit
you then she was feeling trapped! Id suggest that you try to keep a close eye on her so that you can reprimand
her when she tries to take things from the counter. A good way to do this would be to put a few pennies in a soda
can and tape the opening closed. When she is "in the act" of trying to get things she shouldnt then youd throw
the can at her feet. The principle is to startle her for the wrong doing. Then follow thru with a good firm NO, BAD
Dog/Girl. Hope this helps. |

I would FIRST ask myself "do I want this type of dog and temperament around the innocent young child that I am bringing into this world". I dog who bites its master has SERIOUS temperament problems. "Feeling trapped" is just a "cop out" and "the penny can" is good for training a SOUND dog. What is this "idiot" going to do when your child "corners it" . It MIGHT be TOO Late then. I suggest talking to your vet. I know what I would do with it!!!!!!!! |

Hi, Im sorry your having a problem with your dog, but you need to get her straight before this gets any worse! This is why dogs ( not just Akitas )need training and lots of it! I would spend the money and get a VERY GOOD trainer in .Not just some jo down the street.Get references from vets and other dog people so your sure your getting someone who knows what he/she is talking about. Then he/she can evaluate this dog they can come into your home and you can tell the trainer everything thats going on with your dog, and see if the trainer thinks this dog should be kept in your home.( now I dont know you or your dog but the end result may be to put this dog down) You dont want to get rid of her and have her biting someone else. Plus there are people out there who think beating her will stop her from biting and that would be a bad end result also. Sometimes putting them down is the best decision. (im sorry if that happens) Also did you get her from a breeder? If you did contact him/her and a |
Akita: Keeping A Biter?????????????
|
Posted Date: 2000-08-28 12:35:00 By: Ariel
Why would you even CONSIDER keeping a dog who bit you (its owner) when you are expecting to bring a child into this household?? Do you value this "biting FREAK" over your unborn child?? You need to stop listening to these people in "la la land" and accept your RESPONSIBILITY as a parent!! Some may even consider this to be a case of CHILD ENDANGERMENT keeping a KNOWN BITER around a young infant or toddler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Ok first of all, I do not think that anyone would want to put a child at risk or anyone else for that matter! We are all just trying to help each other out right? It seems to me that this is the first bite am I correct? So I guess what some of you are saying is that when 7 years ago when my dog bit me over a toy (on the nose!) I should have just put him down or gave him up. Well, I corrected this problem and I have 12 nieces and nephews who he has never gone for and hes a certified therapy dog and C.G.C. and CH. By the way that was the ONLY time he did anything like that, I think it was because we had just gotten our other dog at the time so there was some jealousy.(He is 10 years now.) So this person has not put anyone at risk (besides her/ husband) and I dont think she would EVER let her baby be at risk, she does need to get this dogs temp. checked out but please do not judge her , you do not have the right you do not even know her or more important her dog. Im sure if this dog does |

another thing is if she ever does this again if it is the dark and she has sorta a glazed look in her eyes she may not recongnize and i dont know how many months pregnant you are but with the change in your appearance also may have caused her to mistake you i know when we first got our akita i ahd always worn shorts for like the first 2 months we had her then winter rolled around pulled out the pants and she bit the pants very ficiously thinking i was a strainger akitas are very loyal and protective of their families any change in your appearance can easily be mistaken for an intruder trying to harm her family |

Dear concerned what a total idiot you are. You call this dog an idiot, why dont you put the responsibility where is should be? With the idiot who is raising it. I am so sick and tired of fools who know nothing about this breed and how to properly raise it, totally ruining their dogs and the reputation of this breed. God help this wonderful and awesome breed and please protect it from idiots like "Concerned". |

I find it rather interesting that people attack the toddler dog like it is some killing machine? All young need to be trained. All three of my children bit me and broke skin. They had to be trained just like my Akitas. The husband and owner should realize that they need obedience training most importantly so they can realize how a dog thinks and how to control it w/ training. Ever think of that? Any large breed of dog should be in obedience training and seriously someone who has no experience in handling or training should have known this ahead of time. I was pregnant w/ our first Akita. We went into training when he was 5 months old for 3 months. I realized it was me who needed the training!! Be responsible and spend the money and time. Dont listen to ignorant spout offs like Ive read. Spend your time doing what you know is right by the dog. You purchased it, be loyal to it like it will to you.
Goodluck |

well actually an akita att hat age is going through a dominance testing stage...did u put your face in the akitas face when it bit u?...akitas are known as nose fighters meaning that they were originally bred for dog fighting and they like to go for the other dogs face..if u had your face in yours akitas face then it was just a reaction especially at that age..u need to just let the dog know that your boss and u wont tolerate that and all will be fine unless the dog came from a bad breeder?i dont think u should throw the dog to the trash heap like this other guy is telling u to...u need to work witht he dog and bring the dog to an obedience trainer b4 just giving up on the dog...dont listen to the guy who posted the messaage b4 m4..he obviously doesnt know much about akitas..lol... |

i agree with u cookgirl....if these people want to buy akitas or any other breed out of fighting or big game hunting lines they should read about the history of the dog and know the power of the dog and most of all if your going to buy a dog like this then u have to put time and money into obedience training or dont even bother getting the dog.. |

Just an FYI - no matter what the temperament and no matter how sweet, there is one thing you must NEVER forget: under no circumstances should anyone EVER leave a large dog of any breed/disposition alone and unsupervised with a baby, toddler, or small child. It is stupid, unsafe, and just asking for a tragic accident. I repeat - even the sweetest dog is not exempt, so NEVER leave your large dog alone with your child, no matter how you resolve this problem eventually. |

"concerned" sounds like abig blow hard cry baby who makes himself feel better by having power over a big dog like an akita and putting it to sleep because he got beat up in school by bullies too many times when he was younger..lol
...go get a penis implant or something to make yourself feel like a big man "concerned"..what do u own? dalmations or labs or maybe its cocker spaniels..all of them being the most prone to bite...lol.. |

You know for you putting other breeds down now is really quite annoying, I happen to own a cocker too, and to which I am not too happy about you putting other people down for their oppinions , isnt it what this board is for. I hope that you know that talking like you do makes YOU look like trash more than the the "concerned" person and you also put a stereo-type on Akita owners what are they all pushy and obnoxious like your-self I know Im not that way and I think most of us are not.I was going to let your comments go but I wanted to stick up for us dog owners... |

Now that I have responded to you, and told you what I have thought of your childish ways Im done with this subject not wasting my time with you. See you on the board :) |
