Airedales are not "hypo-allergenic" dogs, but they do cause fewer allergic responses than do many other dogs.
Dog allergies vary as to cause. Most people are allergic to the dander. Others are allergic to the dust carried in the coats, the hair itself, the coat oils, etc. Airedales derive from a cross between terriers and hounds. Therefore, they do have more dander and more coat oils than do the Welsh, Lakeland, and Wire Fox terriers. If you are highly sensitive to the dander or coat oils, an Airedale may not be the right dog for you.
The dander is released in the coat from brushing and grooming of the dog. If you have someone else keep your dog well groomed, you likely will not have allergic problems. If you groom your dog yourself, use a mask and gloves - and you should be ok. If you dont keep the dog groomed, the dog will have an increased amount of dander and you will also have problems.
My husband has dog allergies, but he is fine with the Airedales. |
