Airedale Terrier: Advice Needed
|
Posted Date: 2003-01-12 13:12:39 By: LI Bill
I have a 9 year female spayed old Lab, and I am thinking seriously about another dog. My current dog is completely gentle
My children are 9 and 15. I have a large back yard.
I am torn between a Sheppard and an Airedale. Recently, somebody tried to break into my house. I am NOT looking for an attack dog, but my current dog is no deterrent, in fact, she would welcome an intruder and may not even bark.
My questions are as follows:
1) How would a puppy get along with a grown dog?
2) What advantages does an Airedale have over a German Sheppard?
3) Are Airedales of comparable intelligence to sheppards?
4) Are they known for being protective and territorial.
My sincere thanks for any replies.

Airedale Terrier: Airdale with health problems.
|
Posted Date: 2001-06-16 12:55:53 By: Ereeni
I have an 8 year old Airdale who is the most sweetest, loving dog. About one year ago the breeder told me to start feeding him a senior formular dog food. Prior to that he was on Nutromax which he seemed to do okay on. I then started feeding him Nutromax Senior and I noticed his eyes tearing and he has some kind of sore on the side of his mouth. He has been to the vet several times, had blood work done and nothing has shown up. The vet put him on an eye ointment which cleared up the eye problem but when you stop the ointment
the tears start up again. As far as the side of the mouth,
he has been placed on Keflex.
Once again it works and the moment you stop the Keflex, it starts up again. I was also advised by the vet to put 1 part bleach to 9 parts water and wipe the side of the mouth every day. One day you don't do it and the odor is horrible. Over the last 2 months this boy has been messing the house with a bowl movement. It seems when he has to go, he just goes. Sometimes he cannot make it outside fast enough. I have been trying other foods such as Back to Basics, California Natural, Canidae and my last one to try will be Wellness with less fiber. I seem to feel that to much fiber is the problem. I am very upset because this dog has never messed in my house. We have an appointment with a specialist next Tuesday and I pray that they can find out what is wrong with my poor baby. If anyone has experienced this with their Airdale, would you be kind enough to advise me . Thank you for your help. Trying to get my boy back to being well. |

I am interested in finding a female Airedale that is at least a year old but not more than two. She has to be good around kids and doesnt "eat" cats. I have an invisible fence around a spacious yard, so she cant be too agressive or she can elope and run the neighborhood. I have had two other Airedales and when our last one died, I thought she would be the last. But that was about a year ago...and look what I am doing! Please get back to me if you have any information or leads in finding our new family memeber. Thanks is advance for your help. Ron |

Airedale Terrier: Ear Gluing

My airedale puppy is four months old. His ears were glued by the breeder, but they came undone about 3 weeks later. We let them rest a week and I had a handler in the area glue them again. A week later they came unglued again. Once again we let them rest a week and glued them ourselves as we were shown by the breeder. Guess what . . a week later and the little stinger has scratched and pawed them loose again. HELP . . . any suggestions. We are going to let the area rest for a week because the Miles (my ADT) has done quite a number with all the scratching and rubbing on the carpet, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Deane,
I am not trying to belittle your experience or expertise....I just think you come on a little strong..You dont help people make an educated decision with such a strong attitude. Rather, you scare them away from owning a perfectly wonderful pet and inveribly they will look elsewhere. Some people cant afford the prices of a "show Quality" dog nor can they afford to show them as is required by most show people. I, for one dont think that should automatically exclude them from owning the kind of pet they would like to have. I agree whole-heartedly about rescue. I think that is the first place they should look, but there isnt always a rescue dog that will be compatible with their family. Where does it end up? Back in rescue.!
What is wrong with a person breeding excellent quality dogs and selling them for pets with a spay/neuter contract to the average Joe that cant afford to show or to buy a show quality dog? I totally respect what show people are doing. I think they |

We bought this Airedale terrier when he was 3 months old, he is now 6 months, we live in Az. Recently he was diagnosed with "Marked Focal Dermatophyte Folliculitis and Furunculosis" is anyone familiar with that? How does he get it? The Vet told us it can turn into gaseous gangrene and kill him. He now gets a fungus pill for three weeks and antibiotics. It can also be passed on to humans. Any information anyone can give me would be appreciated. How does a dog get that, we dont live in a wet climate. The Vet feels he brought it from the breeder? Any information at all would be appreciated. |

I have a 6 month old airedale terrier, bought when he was three months old. The Vet tells me that it can be "fatal, and can be passed on to humans." The dog was put on antibiotics and a fungal pill that cost 5 bucks a whack, hell get those for three weeks. But thats not the point, the Vet said it could come from the soil where he was raised, could come from unclean kennel conditions or a number of other factors. My questions is, has anyone ever had an animal with that disease, once treated and "cured" can it come back? We live in Arizona and are surrounded by sand etc, not a fungus in sight? Id appreciate private e-mail since I am not sure I can find this message board again. Your help would be appreciated. |

im the owner of a 12 year old female (spayed) airedale. lately shes been feeling her age.
my question ... for the last month or so, shes been waking my wife and i in the middle of the night by coming to our bed and crying/wimpering for our attention. not knowing what she wants, we let her out. whats strange is that shes been walked before bed and has done her business. its almost as though she wants to go out for some sort of higher calling. its not that we mind, its just that this sort of behavior is not usual.
does she, as we are all getting older, just not able to hold herself until morning or is there some other reason to this behavior? |

I have a 4 month old puppy and I am looking at getting her spayed the first week in march. The following week I am going to have her boarded when i go out of town at a canine motel and they let the dogs play together and run. do you think it will be OK a week after her surgery to be playing with other dogs and it could get ruff at times? The Vet said she should be healed in a week but I dont want to take any chances. I would love to hear you opinion and experiences!

My fifteen month old son was attacked this past Sunday by an 8 year old male airdale. My son was sitting on the floor playing and the owner was even on the floor playing wiith the dog. THe dog simply and totally unprovoked (altho, I firmly believe there is NO reason for such a viscoous attack anyway) grabbed my sons head. He required 11 stitches which is a lot for a baby. So my question would be to ask if this could be a tendency of the breed in older dogs or what. I dont even begin to know what to expect out of htis dog, except it will NEVER be around my children again. A appreciate any info on airdale aggression anyone can give me. |

I have a 2 yr old airedale/german shep mix. Hes got a terrible problem with pica. It was so bad that in Oct 99 he had to have surgery to remove drier sheets that were obstructing the bowels. We have known for a year that he has inflammatory bowel disease. Weve got him on Venison and potato by IVD; prozyme, vitiamin B, derm caps, and bottled water. These have helped some--but when we began to switch from Venison to Science Diets ID which is a the new diet reccomended by experts, he begane the pica again. His pica in the past has been paper products and scarves that are swallowed whole and coughed back up within 72 hours. Does anyone out there have trouble with Pica or IBd with your airdales ? Any suggestions ?
