Catahoula Leopard Dog: Catahoula/Lab puppy

I just adopted a Catahoula/Lab mix. She is 12 wks old. I am amazed at how intelligent this dog is! I have had her for 2 wks .now .and am concerned that I haven\'t researched the breed enough. We just lost our 13 yr old lab-he was a typical goofy guy-Loved that dog.
She really acts like a lab, a little more mischievous, and super smart and LOTS of energy, okay...nothing like a lab.
Anyone have or has had a Catahoula/Lab mix??? |

To own a catahoula, one must own a crate. Especially if they do not have proper stimuli (phys.&mental). They need these things or they'll go nuts& take you and your house with him. Lost some lenolium learning that. The joys of this amazing breed far outweigh the damage. A good one will be the most wonderful dog you've ever known. They just need to know who's boss. |

Catahoula Leopard Dog: What is a Leopard Hound?

I was given a dog two years ago by a friend who could not train her on cattle. He said that she is a full blooded Leopard Hound, which I assumed was a Catahoula (she looks like one). He was quick to correct me, however. Can anyone tell me the difference and if they are related to Catahoulas? He badly abused her, so she is skiddish, but other than that she has the look and personality of the breed. |

Yesterday I adopted a 9 month Catahoula mix from animal control. They say he is half rat terrier, but his head shape makes him look like he might be part pointer or possibly lab. He was found running in the country. He is extremely sweet and smart, but whenever my brother comes around he starts barking and is very hard to quiet. I believe he may have been abused by men in his past. Is there anything about the breed thatwould make him like this? Does anyone have any advice on how to help him? I am a first time Catahoula owner and I would love any advice, especially on helping him get over this fear.THANK YOU |

My local newspaper posts pictures and a brief description of dogs available for adoption at our local SPCA. There is a 2 year old, male, merle colored, Catahoula Leopard Dog available. I thought maybe someone out there would be interested. Call the Cumberland County, NJ SPCA at 856-691-1500 if you are interested in adopting. I think they charge $90 for adoption, including neutering.
Thanks!

I have a catahoula that unfortunately the people who had her before me beat her very bad. I have had her for about a year now and although she is better than at first, she is still very, very timid at just about anything. She isnt afraid of me now and seems to trust me fully, but if anyone else is holding anything or reaches to pet her (just about anything) she gets scared to death and hits and ground and starts trembling with fear. Even with the people who are around her a lot. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on how to work with a dog that has been beaten. She is a great dog other than that and Im glad I got her, but I feel just awful for her and I dont know how to help her or if it is possible for them to not be so scared after being abused. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

I was wondering if anyone had any information on catahoulas. I found a stray dog a while back and took her in. My vet says that he thinks she is a full blooded catahoula. She is a very sweet but very protective dog. Her body build is similar to a greyhound and she is red with tiger stripes or brindle with very yellow eyes. Most people that I have over are very afraid of her because of her eyes and because she is very standoffish and watches them like a hawk until she gets to know them. She is a very good and sweet dog with people she knows, but at the very sight of another dog (or animals in general) her hair stands up and she is in immediate attack mode. Does this sound like a catahoula? Any information would be appreciated.

Catahoula Leopard Dog: Max needs a new home
|
Posted Date: 2000-06-11 13:57:00 By: Astrodog
My name is Max and I need a new home, wont you help? I am a volunteer with Pet Rescue, Inc. in South Florida. Today while adopting out a foster dog some folks approached me and asked if we could help place "Max" a Catahoula Leopard Hound they have been fostering. They are moving to a smaller apt. and can only take two of the three dogs they have. Max is pure bred, Neutered, 1 year old, Dapple in color, and he weighs 50 lbs. He is up to date on all his shots and vaccinations. They are not willing to give him to anything other than a good and loving home. He is very gently and gets along with other pets and kids. If you are interested, please call me at 954-961-6764. Leave contact information if you get my machine. Please help Max find a loving home. |

Catahoulas are a dominant breed by nature,so YOU must always be in control! They are also very territorial, and do not always descriminate between friend or foe, so I do not advise letting a Catahoula-or any dog for that matter, run free without supervision. Catahoulas can become overly-protective of children; I have had to take back a young dog which began attacking the mother when she tried to discipline her toddler, because she had allowed the dog to become the dominant member of the household. They are not "bird dogs", and were bred to hunt four-legged game, especially of the more dangerous variety, but they will stalk and kill wild birds and eat them. I have bred these dogs for many years, so feel free to email me with questions about them. |

I am trying to find out if what my neighbor said is correct. He told me his dog was a Catahoula, said they get the name because their favorite meal was cats. This dog eats one a week (strays ) we are in the country and I know there are a lot of stray cats around, is this bizzare or what. Gary |

Catahoula Leopard Dog: What is a leapord curr

Posted Date: 2000-07-11 10:46:00 By: Curious
My father recently purchased a dog known as a leapord curr. I dont think it is recognized by the akc, but it may be by the ukc. What is the difference between akc and ukc regestered dogs?
This dog very much resembles the leapord dog. However he is totally gray with black spots and faint red on his shoulders. His eyes are brown and one has a white birthmark.
Has anyone heard of a leapord curr? I thought a curr dog was simply a mutt, but my father saw the sire and the bitch.
He says they were both the same dog. Perhaps a curr is a fullblooded dog in this case! I have no idea, but I would appreciate any information someone could give me. Thanks....

I have had my Catahoula for since she was a pup. When she was about a 1 1/2 years old she started limping. We took her to the vet and she had a metal pin put into her left rear leg. Now about 6 years later, she is limping again and i am wondering if anyone else out there has had this problem with there Catahoula. She is my pride and joy, her Name is Kallie, and is the most beautiful, sweetest dog i have ever had. I will be a catahoula owner for the rest of my life... You can bet on it. Thanks, and any information will be appreciated. |

I have a friend with a 5 year old and he never acts like that with her. Any idea why its just those certain kids? They dont bother him at all. I have to put him in his cage when theyre here. Is that a normal catahoula thing?? |
