Jack Russell Terrier: Advice needed
|
Posted Date: 2003-10-09 14:47:55 By: Randigale
I have a JRT that I bought about 5 days ago. I didn't get him from a breeder. I think he's about 7-9 weeks old. So, my problem is that I've heard and read that he should be basically psycotic, but he is no worse than a normal puppy... plus he sleeps A LOT! I wasn't too worried until today when my sister saw a JRT at a pet store that was about Jack's age and she couldn't even hold him because he was so playful. I know it sounds crazy but I'm worried that something is wrong with him and that's why he's so calm. Someone please respond... I'm very worried. |

The reason for my selling her is, my finances have changed so that I can't take care of her. She needs some one who can take care of her and give her all the love I give her. Jack Russell Terrier: Jack Russell to be euthanized
|
Posted Date: 2003-09-18 16:59:00 By: nomaddamon
Hello! My name is Christiane Jones. I am currently employed at Rogersville
Animal Hospital in Rogersville, MO. We have a contractual agreement with
the city of Rogersville to vaccinate and board strays. After four days, if
the dog is not claimed by the owner or adopted, we euthanize.
At present, we have a male, intact Jack Russell Terrier (or Jack Russell
mix) which is running out of time. I am paying the boarding costs to give
this dog one more day to find a home. He was found wandering the parking
lot of a local grocery store. He is quite friendly. Is good with kids and
does not seem aggressive with other dogs. I do not know about his
aggression with cats...we have two clinic cats but his exposure to them has
been minimal.
He is approximately 20lbs (probably much less but I don't have his chart
with me at the moment) and very hyper. I can email photos.
I would be willing to travel to meet someone halfway if it means giving this
dog a second chance.
Please contact me at syd@peoplepc.com or 417-767-4769 (message). My work
number is 417-753-3344 and I can be reached there Mondays, Tuesdays and
Thursdays. I can house the dog up to a week at my home but I have nine
other dogs and can not house another for longer than a week. My neighbors
are already protesting about my current arrangments. If you can be of any
assistance, I would greatly appreciate the help!

Jack Russell Terrier: Separation anxiety and JRTs
|
Posted Date: 2003-09-11 22:23:44 By: Laura
My boyfriend and I adopted an almost 2 year old Jack Russell in July named Larry. He is SO attached to my boyfriend that if we start to hug or cuddle up, he will come running from across the room, squeeze up between us, and growl!! When he comes home from work, he jumps up on him and starts licking him and will not leave him alone! My boyfriend is very easygoing and doesn't discourage this clingy behavior. When he is at work, Larry follows me around sometimes but not the extent he follows him. Also, when we are at a strange place like someone else's home, he will whine or bark until my boyfriend returns. We went to the lake with his family over Labor Day and when he would be out of sight, Larry cried for him so much that it sounded like he was talking...his bottom lip even quivered! At home, he follows him everywhere and even waits outside the bathroom until he returns.
Also, I am extremely ticklish. When my boyfriend tickles me, I start laughing. That really sets the dog off! I think he feels threatened because terriers are very protective. On one occasion, instead of pushing Larry off and telling him no and even though I was the one getting "attacked', he snapped at me and almost bit my face! It really scared me!
I don't know if it is a Jack Russell thing or not. I grew up with a Fox Terrier and I remember the protectiveness but not this type of behavior. To complicate it further, I am not sure if his severe separation anxiety is because his former owners were forced to give him up!
I would love to know if any other JRT owners have experiences like this.

I will not give up on him but could use some good advise on what works with JRT's as I am really only used to working with Dobes but couldn't let him be put down for something that is really the original owners fault for never putting down any rules. WE have a jack that is 9 months old and just completed her first heat. 100% certain she cannot be pregnant but she is displaying signs of lactation (two of her nipples are swelling badly like they are getting ready to lactate). is this NORMAL? a friend said it may mean that she has cists on her overies, which is causing the false pregnancy. if so, we need to have her fixed. We have also heard false pregnancy might just be normal in some dogs. PLEASE HELP. you may send me an email direct at BorderPhD@aol.com |

Actually I have 2 rat terriers (1 male, 1 female). There was no message board for rats so I'll ask this here and see if anyone can help. My male is 3 yrs old and my female is almost 8 months old. I think she might have gotten pregnant in her first heat. What are the risks? Will she be ok? Everyone keeps saying they should'nt get pregnant until they are over 1 yr old. Has anyone ever had this happen, and were the puppies and mom ok? Thanks~ |

Sorry - it cut off what I was saying:
I know a bunch of people that had been doing UKC agility and enjoyed it.
I have not changed my breeding program nor did I run out and buy a bunch of new dogs from JRTAA members to fit in. I breed for a 12-13" dog who can and does still hunt. It is a shame people have this be all end all image of the club as the best while it is better than some but far from perfect. Every dog I breed / show has been BAER tested and Cerf. tested.
My motto is if you dont rescue then dont breed. I have done rescue for as long as I have bred. Everyone cant stand backyard breeders but they all bought their dogs from someone so before everyone casts a stone please look close since it could be one of yours if you dont : 1. Sell with a contract. 2. Keep in touch with owners 3. Put a clause stating they are to return the dog if they cant keep it. Most backyard breeders get their dogs from the horse show crowd, pet shops or were given this dog! Most re |

Funny, everyone thinks that the waiting until 1 year and getting a vet health certificate is so wonderful and the perfect way to keep problems down. But, I know a lady that was a friend of the vets and she filled out her own vet certificates and got the vet to sign them and he never saw the dogs. I know people who have had their dogs ears surgically corrected and had braces put on their dogs teeth. And of course, at one year, go to another vet and get a health certificate. And when this was reported to the club, they didnt want to hear it. Again, it is up to the breeder, not the clubs to determine whether or not to breed that dog. No registry club is perfect, they all have their faults. If a dog is sold on full registration as a pup and their is nothing wrong with it, it is up to the new owner to determine whether that pup should be bred. If they buy a dog on limited registration, and want to switch to full registration, we require that they get a vet certificate before we will |

Well gee.. If you dont give the buyer a stud cert and a pedigree they cant register the pup with the JRTCA once the dog is a year old. They can spay/neuter and record the dog, thats it!
<>
And to register with the JRTCA you have to have a 4 generation pedigree, stud certificate, photos, etc. So whats so great about how the AKC does it?

Jack Russell Terrier: Disposable dogs

The probelm I think was that this breeder had an awful lot of turn over is a short period of time, dogs are not disposable. I have stayed out of that debate cause I dont know all the issues, but that is my opinion. Yes we all have an ocassional terrier that we might place ,but from the list I saw that was quite a few and maybe someone is being to picky looking for the perfect dog(no such thing) ,to me it almost seems like she will never be happy. If I was a breeder of excess I wouldnt let her have one of mine with that kind of history. What will she find wrong a spot in the wrong place? And then down the road he goes.I know from horses and friends that show all over it takes more than just a nice terrier or horse to be a "big winner", politics is a factor .I also notice that she is making a purchase with a currently popular kennel name, this will not automatically get you a win. You got to pay your dues and jumping from dog to dog is not gonna cut it. |

it took months for me to locate a breeder who would even talk to me
about a new pup, if I had been limited to phone and snail mail,
I could never have done it, now Im hoping to hear from the only one
who would be honest and open with me, I have a deposit down on a
male tri ESS, and will be co-owning with the breeder, the only other
breeder who had contacted me, wanted $950.00 for one on neuter contract.
after I had made it known to him that I wanted to show and eventually
breed this pup, now how is that right? yah, I use the net for shopping
for dogs, and why else would any of us list on the web? |

Hasnt anyone else ever spay/neutered a breeding dog that didnt work out? Ive placed three in the last few years that just werent producing what I wanted. They are now living happily in great pet homes, does that make me a bad person? I think not!!!! I guess accroding to these comments I should have kept them and let them live out the rest of their lives in my kennel instead of being an only dog with a good family? I spayed a great little bitch last year, she had a litter of three and all three were pets and one was a uni, spayed her and sent the pups with spay/neuter contracts. She now lives with a 11 year old boy and is the light of his life,so was that a bad thing? Hasnt anyone else ever tried to find a new stud dog? I would love to have a show quality under smooth stud dog so Patti if you find one let me know. |

Cant we give the JRTCAvsAKC thing a rest? Both registrys have ALOT of problems, neither one is perfect. The AKC needs health checks like the JRTCA etc etc.But I lost a lot of faith in the CA when they started kicking out great working terrier people over bullshit. They are on a serious power trip that will ultimately be settled in court.I still have my dogs and kennel registered with them because I CHOSE not to go AKC.Its a personal choice, makes no difference who you register with as to whether or not your an ethical breeder. There are also puppy mills in the CA,not just the AKC.I know of several people that keep 50 to 75 dogs and churn out 20 litters a year,to me that qualifys.Just because you register a kennel name and have a website doesnt mean you arent a puppy mill and NO Im not pointing any fingers at anybody, just stating fact.To me this is a bigger problem than where someones dogs are reg. |

So there are bad breeders in JRTCA to? And puppymills? But one question how do these puppymills sell their JRTs without reg papers on hand? Most common ppl dont know anything about JRTs or JRTCA and buy on impulse, therefore I would expect they would want "papers" with the pup, and if these breeders are puppymillers I would expect they sell alot of pups to the general public. I was just wondering because I heard that the Amish breeders reg their JRTs with JRTCA also. Why cant JRTCA stop puppymillers from registering? They do the most harm to the breed in my opinion.<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I would not imagine that the amish use the JRTCA as a registry, they often use the CKC(continential kennel club) as this registry only requires a mom and a dad to register, no pedigree or history is needed and actually you can register on-line.
I am a realist to understand that there a lousy breeders in every registry JRTCA included. JRTCA dosent have the time just as AKC dosent have to the to |

3-27-00 1 1/2 year old male for adoption
4-2-00 Response to internet stud request with "e-mail me"
4-12-00 Wanted smooth bitch 4mon.-1year Quote "I want to win when I show."
4-14-00 5 year old brood bitch done and ready for adoption
6-6-00 Wanted 10 month old smooth female. (again)
9-12-00 Wanted smooth male tan/white and again stated, "Im very picky, but I know what I want."
Well Patti Podliska, I dont think you know what you want and I dont think I would get any more dogs or plan on breeding any. You obviously have too many that youve "used" up and are no longer useful to you and you |
Jack Russell Terrier: Lance I have a question

Lance,
This post is NOT meant to start a fight, I have a few questions I honestly dont know the answers to but would lie to, maybe you can help.
I went through some breeder listings on Breedersweb and noticed that many listings said CKC, JRTCA reg JRTs available, one ad said AKC, JRTCA, CKC reg. I didnt think you were allowed to reg with a KC registry if you are a JRTCA breeder, is this allowed? And my last question is if you have a pup out of two AKC parents (background being JRTCA) and havent yet reg the pup with any KC would it still be eligible for JRTCA reg at one yr old? If you could help with these questions (nicely please) I appreciate it. |
Jack Russell Terrier: WHY AM I SO HOSTILE?

Gary take a look at what is being done to this working dog www.catahoulaleopard.com
There you have it folks. Why am I so hostile? Because when KCs invade breeds, the breeds become big business. More care is taken in reeping in the big bucks than caring for the heritage of the breed, let alone the qualities that keep a dog true to why it was developed in the first place. Im hostile because some peanut on here said "get earth titles for your dogs before you breed them or dont breed" or something to that stupid effect. If you guys dont like what I have to say, why post to me? You just make me resent you all the more. Anti UKCer is on the right track, but I suppose that because he/she posted a link to the ruination of the Catahoula, he/she is hostile too? KCs disgust me. As do people who insult dogs to get a point across by saying if Lances dogs work they must look like poodles. How is that a fact? Its not like what has been said about puddins. Puddins are not true Jack Rus |

What is wrong with you people??? Bicker, bicker!!!! It really doesnt matter which club you belong to,what type of dog you like etc. The main point is that you care about the Jack Russell as a dog,period.AKC,JRTCA,EJRTCA...none of it really matters. The main problem with the Jack right now is its increasing popularity and the number of backyard idiots out there whose only interest is to make a quick buck.Want to do something for the dogs?Quit arguing amongst yourselves and go to your local pound and rescue. |

I didnt say they were good or bad or correct. I know they are not correct to the JRTCA or AKC standard. But they are a JR. That is the only fact I was trying to make because someone said they werent a JR. And I didnt say the club for them was good, I just stated that there is one. I dont have any myself. But it is personal preference as to which type of JR you want. Why is everyone so hostile! |

Oh yes these dogs kill fox, NO ppl kill them with guns!
And as for the overabundance of Fox. We have seen quite a few fox and coyote here. We saw 2 fox darting into the woods on the road last week.
Ya know what guys this is gettin kinda old and im tired of expaining myself. I am new to the breed, still learning, and no I dont hunt. I think that sums it up. I choose to stay with AKC, and thats my right. I thought about going to JRTCA but after thinking about it through and through I decided to stay where I am. AKC does have bad points as I pointed out in earlier posts, but they are starting to improve. Sorry if you guys dont like AKC, I cant help that. But I would appreciate it if you didnt put my dogs down or me cause you really dont know us. As far as hunting goes I can only tell you what my husband has told me. And if you have more questions I can try to talk him into getting gon here and expaining better. He doesnt use the computer much and is not nearly as sweet as I am LOL. |

Just wanted to let you know that just because we went AKC does not mean that we are getting more for our pups. In fact I am getting less. In three years I have sold more pups on limited registration then on full registration. Most people just want pets. I sell a pup for less on AKC limited registration then when I sell them with JRTCA papers. Full registration is about the same as JRTCA registration. So, your comment about going AKC for the money is not true. If you knew everything about the JRTCA that I did you might just change your tune. There are lots of reasons that people went with AKC and left the JRTCA. |

I am a breeder that puts AKC/JRTCA/CKC as advertisement. My adult dogs up until 1997 are registered with the JRTCA. In 1997 I registered them with AKC. So, all the adults are registered with the JRTCA and the AKC. The pups all have AKC papers but can upon request of the buyer get JRTCA papers instead. They are also CKC registered. ONE GOOD THING ABOUT AKC IS THE BREEDER HAS THE OPTION TO SELL THE DOG ON LIMITED OR FULL REGISTRATION. THIS IS ONE THING THE JRTCA DOES NOT HAVE! IN ORDER TO GET THE DOGS IN AKC I HAD TO HAVE A 3 GENERATION PEDIGREE AND ALL THE DOGS HAD TO BE REGISTERED AND THEY REQUIRED PICTURES. IT TOOK A LOT OF RESEARCH AND WORK. SO DONT PUT DOWN THE AKC. And yes, the JRTCA at one year requires that the dog get a vet certificate before registering, but again it is the breeder who should determine if that dog should be bred or not. Puppies can still be registered with the JRTCA if they meet the criteria but what about the people that "alter" their dogs like hav |

I honestly couldnt kill something if I had to. And really its not a baying sound just a really shrill bark so to speak. All I know is that my cousins and husband have taken them out and come back with little red fox furs. <<<<<<
JRTS are not bred to kill, they are bred to bay and bolt or bay and hold quarry till you dig to them.
More JRTCA people work than AKC people , you can proably count on one hand how many in AKC actually do real earth work. And that number will shrink as the almighty CH is sought after. Cant have then scars mess ya up for the ring. |

A puddin is a Jack Russell. It is usually short legged (may have crooked legs) and is usually long in the back. It is usually longer than it is tall. But it is a Jack Russell. They even have their own registry now. They have the same hunting instincts. May not fit down a hole but they have the instinct. When you breed a standard Jr with a puddin JR you get a tweener. |

MS I heard you were looking for me. Please E-mail. Yes, my dogs are now AKC registered and the adults are JRTCA registered. Everyone has the right to register their dogs with who they want to. They may have reasons that you do not understand or know. All registeries have their faults. Who ever said that about the height needs to recheck the AKC standard. You have more control with AKC than some other clubs about pups you sell being bred. Why is everyone fighting about this anyway. I have the same dogs now then when I was with the JRTCA. |

Hi everyone,
I replied to a few messages and for some reason they are not showing up. So I thought Id start a new thread to see if this works.
I own, show, hunt and breed JRTs. Im quite amazed that some on here are saying that earthdog titles have something to do with keeping hunting ability strong. My dogs love go to ground, but if thats all theyd do, I wouldnt breed them. I have two dogs with NHCs for Groundhog and Racoon. I have one that has a NHC for Racoon. Im hoping in the future to get bronze medallions. I think my Rottie would do gtg also if there was a tunnel big enough. LOL I dont think that a dog going into a tunnel shows that they will hunt. Ive seen dogs that WONT do gtg work wonderfully in the field, and then dogs that are awesome at gtg who wont hunt. My dogs are also BAER and CERF tested. And they test clear. I wouldnt breed them if they didnt. They also do very well in the conformation ring.
I also worry about our breed getting AKC r |

I think everyone can understand what Im saying, except of course YOU. Why do you insist on fighting? I for one am really tired of it, and tired of these stupid boards. Just because you dont agree with something does NOT give you all the right to call names and make assumptions.
My dogs do work, but my kids and I also enjoy showing them, in both obedience and conformation, my kids also do juniors. If there is something wrong with this than Im guilty. |

Mary, you have nothing to worry about, if your dogs work the way they
were meant to, and earn titles, then bully for you, youve done your part.
I see this all the time with ESS, and the same old argument, AKC vs. UKC
vs. CKC, if the dog fits the breed standard and is genetically sound, and
can work in the field (wether its actual hunting or trials) and still does
well in the comfirmation ring, then it is what its registration says it is.

I have had Russells as pets for many years and spoke with several breeders in this time, I always understood that they were never interested in the AKC becoming involved with this breed as it would put too many limitations on the breed and that was the beauty of them, now all of a sudden things have changed! Whats the goal now to have them look all the same? |

Hello again,
I just put a leash on Chuck (my JRT) for the very first time last night and realized he doesnt respond to it very well. As a matter or fact he resists against it!
When I try to walk forward he is doing everything in his power to sit down or just plain doesnt want to cooperate.
Is this typical to JRTs when introduced to a leash for the first time and if so, does anyone have any advice on how I might progressively let him get accustomed to having one? From what I understand, having a leash is one of the best ways to keep him in line for both safety and monitoring reasons.
I would hate to do it forcefully so anyone with some tips on the subject matter would really be appreciated.
Thank you,
Eric. |

I have a 1 year old Jack, and I love her to death. I want a second dog, and I am debating on getting another breed, possibly less active, but I love Jacks.
Does anyone have more than 1 Jack, and did it calm down your first one, or did it increase their hyperactivity???
