American Eskimo Dog: Rescue Advice

Hello all! Please help if you can, I would appreciate advice. I am looking to adopt an adult. I have narrowed it down to either an Eskie or a Keeshond. I have read that Eskies have a higher energy level than Keeshonds, and they require lots of exercise or they will become destructive. I would keep it strictly indoors, but take it out for play time, walks, trips, and obedience classes. It would be left alone for six hours a day, four days a week (safe area with crate, chew toys, water). Any advice? Thank you!! Please feel free to email me at: eaphillips@novanthealth.org
Thanks,
Erinn

American Eskimo Dog: Please give me some advice
|
Posted Date: 2003-06-16 17:49:57 By: blake
I have been researching breeds for the last month and would greatly appreciate any advice on the rec. breed of dog given the below info:
Living Situation: I am single in a home with a small fenced yard; live in suburban area
Time away from the house: Graduate student; summers I do most of the work at my house (away 3-6 hrs/day); winters and falls I will be away 4-9 hrs/day
I am looking for a breed w/ the following characteristics:
Temperament: relatively laid back (ie likes human contact, medium energy, but can handle the time I am away)
Living conditions: access to small fenced yard (house)
Grooming: 1x/week
Shed: Light to medium
Size: Medium
Exercise: I am an active person and plan on a daily walk/run w/ my dog; weekends would be devoted to playing frisbee, catch, etc |
American Eskimo Dog: Behavior Problems

I have a 9 year old American Eskimo that we have had since it was one. He has been housebroken since we adopted him but ever since my husband and I moved in together he started having accidents in the house. This has become more and more frequent and even if we go outside to sit for a half hour, he will go in the house. The only solution we have come up with is treating him like a puppy and crating him. This works but we would like to find a long term solution of housebreaking him. |

American Eskimo Dog: D.J. needs a new home
|
Posted Date: 2000-09-15 21:42:00 By: Connie
I have a 6 year old "sweetheart" American Eskimo - he does not have papers as we adopted him ourselves.
We are relocating out west and need to find a good home for him. His name is D.J. He loves animals of all kinds, yes even kitty cats.
We believe he was abused but he has been our pride and joy little "boy" since we brought him home.
If you are willing to give him lots of love we would love to have you adopt him. We will bring him to you to see and meet - Serious inquiries only please.

American Eskimo Dog: Help about Eskie Weight!!!

Posted Date: 2000-08-13 22:21:00 By: Jennifer
I have what I believe is an American Eskimo Dog. She is almost 2 years old and we rescued her from the pound when she was a few months old. She was very skinny and for a long time we couldnt get her past 17 pounds. Suddenly her weight bursted up and now she weighs 35 pounds.
She is 15 inches tall and my question is... What should an Eskie weigh when they are 15"???? She looks like she is really overweight but I dont want to make her too skinny.
What is a reasonable weight to aim for???

I think that the behaviors he exhibits are all age appropriate, but i would still like to elimnate the inappropriate ones before he gets big. he is very friendly outside and with strangers etc.. but he likes to bite, nibble, chew, at home,(OUCH) when he gets excited and wants to play (he doesnt know how to "not hurt" (bite inhibition) he gets carried away, or when he wants to go to the bathroom.~ ALSO, potty training, he does pretty good, but after 2 1/2 weeks, still has abt 2 wee wee accidents/day. we have a crate, but still, he has |

Sorry if this sounds like a silly question :-)!
I know the measurments for the size of an eskimo according to the breed standard, but have never seen one in person to judge their size.
What other medium breeds of dog can you compare the size of an adult *Standard Male* eskimo to? Are they more border collie sized? Keeshond sized? |

Does anyone know any stores or websites that sell Eskie Merchandise?
In pet stores I have seen cookie jars, key chains, shirts, and stuffed animals of so many different dog breeds- but no eskies!
In dog catalogs I have seen wind chimes, snow globes, mouse pads, lawn ornaments, etc. of so many different dog breeds- but no eskies!
In gift shops I have seen statues and figurines of so many different dog breeds- but still no eskies!
Where can I find some eskie merchandise? I am especially looking for a stuffed animal, lawn ornaments, and wind chimes.

American Eskimo Dog: Such an addictive breed :-)

I have never known a breed of dog to be more addictive than the American Eskimo! Although I have yet to own one, I have been hooked on this breed since my first encounter with one a bit over a year ago. Ive loved other breeds before, but no other breed has fascinated me in such a way as the eskie has. My first eskie encounter was at a pet store. Me and my boyfriend were picking up ferret bedding (note: we no longer shop at pet stores that sell animals) and were looking at the dogs. While I was looking at a border collie puppy, my boyfriend pointed out that a little white fuzzy puppy was trying its hardest to get my attention. I looked at the cage below and there he was pawing at the cage and jumping up and down while staring directly at me! His cage tag said he was an American Eskimo Dog. Everywhere I moved, this dogs eyes followed. Boy did he panick in that cage as I walked out of the store later. It was so heartbreaking leaving him. I immediately went home and started looking up info |

American Eskimo Dog: question about eskie breeder i found
|
Posted Date: 2000-06-09 21:31:00 By: FuzzyEskie
Is it wise to trust a breeder who only charges $250.00 for purebred UKC registered American Eskimos? In my search for a reputable eskie breeder, Ive seen prices range from $650.00 to $1,000.00 but this is the only one Ive seen with such ridiculously low prices. I feel they are probably backyard breeders claiming to have great dogs, but Id like to hear from other people with eskie breeder experience before I jump to any conclusions. Thanks a ton!
Please e-mail me with info.

American Eskimo Dog: Peco needs a new mamma this Mother`s Day!
|
Posted Date: 2000-05-12 21:38:00 By: Amy
Peco is a gorgeous, 2 year old, neutered male Eskie. His owners had a new baby and no time for him anymore so they nearly put him into a shelter. The owners are distantly related to a volunteer for Second Chance Boxer Rescue and she couldnt let this sweetie go to a shelter. Peco is wonderful with kids and most other dogs. He does have an issue with the other dog in his adoptive home, which is a standard Poodle. His foster home had a Boxer and a German Shepard of which he got along great with. He spent time with my three dogs, a spitz and two Boxers without one issue. He is now retuning into foster care, and desperately needs a home. If you are interested in Peco, please visit our website at www.secondchanceboxer.com. Peco is currently being fostered in Buffalo, NY. He is a wonderful boy, will you be his new Mamma this Mothers Day? |

American Eskimo Dog: re: behavior
|
Posted Date: 2000-07-11 09:20:00 By: lydia the eskie lover
First of all, it is better to get your dog fixed. Once aggressive behavior is developped, it is very difficult to get it out. YOU HAVE TO BE FIRM with your eskie. it will take a while. For example when your eskies growls at people or at you, be firm on saying NO. Dont let your ekie be dominant. when he or she stop growling, praise that and give him a treat. Always remember, treat when the dog has worked for it... About company, bring people home more often, keeping all safety ofcourse, and little by little he will learn to be sociable. Have him also play with other dogs. that will work well. remember, he is like a problem child. remember not too be too tender, only be firm, but kind and decisive. eskies learn fast with positive reinforcement. |

We have adopted two puppies. The family who owns the mother says she is a "minature spitz," which I have learned can mean anything. The father is a cocker spaniel. According to the pictures Ive found, the mother most closely resembles a small American Eskimo dog. I was curious to see if anyone else had heard of this breed.

My parents have had an American Eskimo for over two years now, and I love it. So, when a woman in my Moms office had six puppies over Christmas break, I had to go see what they were like at 5 days old. Beautiful! Sweetest little things ever.
Anyway, about two hours ago, my Mom called to tell me that the woman wants to give me one for free. She had been charging something like $400 before, which I cant afford, but she is unhappy with the people who have come to look at them so she wants to give me one for free.
Sounds terrible right? Yeh, I thought so too. Id love to have a dog and Ive never met a better breed than the Eskie, but I have a few concerns. The problem is, Im about to graduate from college in May, and Im not sure where life is going to take me. Id like to do some traveling maybe, see the country, and aside from a few short car trips with my parents Eskie, Im just sure how the dog would handle a long time on the road. Has anyone done any traveling with |

I have a 2-year old male Eskie, neutered, and healthy.
But I was having a discussion with a schnauwzer
breeder who is a friend of mine. She said I need
to be feeding a better dog food to guarantee a long
and healthy life for my Eskie. He weighs about 18 pounds.
He is very active, but I am curious what other owners
feed their dogs. My parents raised shelties for years
and we only fed Ken-l-ration Biskit. That product
is no longer made. Anyone out there have any good
suggestions? Right now he and my other three dogs
(other breeds) are on Pedigree dry Lamb with veggies.
Thanks for your help.
