how do they get the smooth coat

how do they get the smooth coat on the collie what other breed was it bred with to give it the smooth coat?

There is no "other breed". Collies come in two varietier:

Rough Coated and Smooth Coated. Both varieties can be born in the same litter. There are Rough Coated champion Collies who have Smooth Coated champion Collie littermates. The Smooth Coated variety has been around as long as the Rough Coated variety. Queen Victoria had Smooth Coated Collies, and even then, they were known to be of the same breed as the Rough Coated variety. They come in the same colors, and , except for coat, are judged by the same standard. The name of the breed is "Collie", not "Smooth Collie" or "Rough Collie" -- "Smooth" or "rough" just indicates variety, much the same as "sable and white", "tri color", "blue merle", or "white" indicates color -- not breed.

yes i know that but they had to first breed different dogs to get the collie originally but they had to go one step further to produce the smoothe coated one i wanted to know what was the other dog they added in the equation to get the smooth coat

That question could be hard to answer, because some people say the early history of the Collie somewhat in dout, because apperently the dog was so common that few writers ever remarked about it. Collies are considered to be one of the oldest breeds on the British Isles.

Some claim that the Collies ancestors were brought to the British Isles by Roman conquerors in the middle of the first century, A.D. and the Stone Age nomads also brought dogs with them to what is now Southern England.

I really like to read about Collie breed developement, and their history, I find it very interesting. Here is a web site with, what some say, very well could be the Collies family tree. Hard to say if this is accurate or not, Take a look if you like though.

also there are a good bit of short haired breeds, that also have the long coated gene that pops up every once in a while, although it may not be very common. ex.... long coated GSD, Rotties, Wiems...etc.

The Smooth coat in Collies is dominat over the rough.
