How do I find a good breeder?

I want to buy a Yorkie puppy. I looked in the paper, but there were only phone numbers, which made me worried about "puppy mills" or shoddy breeders. I checked Colorado on this site, and there is nothing. Is the best a family dog who has been bred? Or a breeder who specializes in champion lines? Please give me some direction. Thanks.

Hi there in Colorado! Did you try looking under www.akc.org? They should have listings for breeders in your area that are not puppy mills or backyard breeders. If you buy from the paper, they only list phone numbers, no addresses or info is given. You would need to call to get specific details and visit their place also to check out the situation. Please be careful and ask lots of questions! A reputable breeder will not be offended to any questions you should have to ask them! Good luck in your search!

I would advise going to the Yorkshire terrier club of American they have breeders by state that abide by the ethical standards of the club.
