I have a beautiful s & p puppy that I believe will be a great show dog. I used to breed german shepherds and can spot a winner most of the time! This dog is 11 weeks old and is crate training now, goes outside to potty most of the time. ONly acidents have been when I didn't get up in time to let her out. She is beautiful and has great potential in the show ring or as a pet. Contact me at 931-387-2915 |

Hi We had a mini for 14 yrs and now have gone for the medium size. Remy is the cutest and is so affectionate. He developed a limp in his front foreleg in Nov that would come & go, but by Feb it was much worse. He has been hosebound for the month of May and was put on prednisone. He hasn'timproved, so the vet is going to investigate other things. Plus in April he developed a "hot spot" from licking on his tummy after being groomed. He is on an anti-depressant called Elavil and has been wearing those "lampshade collars" all month too. We got him from a reputable breeder so I will call her too, but just wondered if any of you have experienced either of these problems with your dogs. I really think Remy would like a job and I am hoping he will get his CGC and become a pet therapy dog. Thanks. |

We took in Jim, a 3 yr old Schnauzer for a elderly couple entering a retirement home. We soon realized Jim has a catarct. He has no behavior problems and LOVES to play. He
does display some insecurity at being alone and when it begins
to get dark outside due to his eyesight. We cant afford the cataract surgery and are looking for a new home for him as we are not able to be with him during the day. He is a
PERFECT family dog protective and friendly. He is full of joy,
SMART and obedient. Please reply to simb1a@gateway.net

We received our standard schnauzer pup 10 days ago he is now
11 week old. We have experienced what I would describe as aggressive behavior. Im not referring to a pups natural tendency for chewing just about everything in sight, but lunge and bite behavior which has become more frequent with each day. As far as correcting this behavior we have tried the command "no bite" to withdrawing from activety. We have not used any form of physical punishment.
This is our 2nd dog, our fist was a cocker spanial which died 3 years ago. The experience with this dog was very good.
Our decision to select a SS was witnessing the behavior of our friends giant which has a great attitude and gentle manner.
Needless to say this has my wife and I very upset and are considering returning the pup to its breeder. The breeder, by the way, has an excellent repeutation in the Schnauzer breeding and show community.
Your thoughts and suggestions are appricieated. Is this expected puppy behavior or do |

Have finally decided that its time for the addition of a dog in our lives. Have always loved the looks of a Schnauzer, have heard good things about its intelligence and good nature... is this the one for me? I have two teenage daughters - both of whom say theyll "take care of" the dog but we all know who ends up with that job. One of my two kids has a minor physical disability and I am thinking that a dog would be a good companion and might help in motivating her to be more active. I live in the Pittsburgh PA area. Any comments on my expectations? |

Dear Schnauzer Lovers: A beloved pet died suddenly today, apparently as a result of Rimadyl toxicity. Another Schnauzer suffered early effects of toxicity from rimadyl about 2 yrs ago but was taken off immediately. I have no proof of this other than anecdotal evidence but it seems overwhelming. Please beware!!!!Nancy Fay |

This week we are going to pick up our 7 week old male S.S. I have been reading material that says a Standard is a good dog to have with a young child. I have also read that training Standards is a little more complicated that other breeds. Do those of you who have Standards agree with this and can you please give me any tips on how best to train my little guy. |

Hello. We purchased "Ed", a 25 month old male standard schnauzer, at 8 weeks of age for my daughters 7th birthday. Ed has been a perfect dog with "personality" to spare.
Ed was exceptionally easy to train even for me as a novice dog owner with no episodes of barking, chewing items, using inside for the bathroom or being aggresive with people. I was always firm and consistent and it worked. He will bark if someone knocks on the door or a squirrel/racoon goes past the door where he sleeps.
Eds always slept in his crate (after about 2 months we took the door off) in the dinette areas of the kitchen and he heads off there on his own about 9pm. He gets up about 6 (so do i) and goes out and does his business. I watch him in the backyard as we have no fence but he always comes when called and has never done "walkabout".
I did notice that as he matured that he was getting a little bit ornery. We had him fixed at about 11 months and that pretty much ended that. My d |

Hi Joe,
I to have an SS who is 15 months old, and he uses his teeth to gain dominance. He doesnt really bite just kind of lets you know that he has the power. We also tried the no bite routine and holding his nose however he still tries to test us. He is OK with me because he knows he will get a slap on the nose if he tries to use his teeth on me, however if my husband is rough housing, he will feel his teeth on his skin so you really need to keep after him. Hope this helps. |
Standard Schnauzer: re: Pet Quality - Schnauzer Puppies
|
Posted Date: 2000-06-19 07:38:00 By: beep4me
The Standard Schnauzer is not always available, it is not like ordering out of a catalog. Many pet quality buyers are often impulsive buyers. They often times do not consider the cost of grooming, food, vet, training classes, the time involved with this breed, especially when a puppy, is considerable. They are sooooo cute but the brain is learning and when the rules change (begging at the table, sitting on the furniture), retraining can be frustrating or nearly impossible. This is a very intelligent dog, loyal family member, and still a fairly healthy breed. As the breeder wants to be sure he is placing one of his pups in a proper home, the buyer needs to ask questions. Who are the parents? Are they OFAd and Cerfd? Why was this breeding done? How are the puppies being raised? I hope this makes some sense. This has been my breed for some 30 years. I have lived, trained, and shown them in competition and never made any money by having puppies! |
