you really don't want this breed for small children...the above post about these dogs being aggressive is very true, we made a big mistake bu getting one 5 years ago for our daughter, based on the hypo-allergy status, it sure doesn't shed...but it thinks it's king of our castle, and if it doesn't like our daughter in the same room with it...it will attack her...we walk on egg shells around this dog most of the time, and can't let others, other than vet around it, it is very very protective of both my husband and myself, it has never been mistreated or trained to act in such a manner... |

You should be FULLY AWARE that although the wheaton as with many other dogs are painted to be very family friendly and overall great dogs. Based on first hand experience this is a breed that animal control officers are frequently called to deal with. There seems to be some sort of potential gene error that can cause them to be just as vicious and aggressive as many more published dangerous dogs. I would really recommend you look into a non-terrier based dog. Unfortunately, everyone seems to be saying this is on of the 'perfect' breeds - but this comes mostly from the breeders that are seeking to raise the $$$$ value of the dog. Even many of the supposed wheaton rescues really aren't real and will also lie as to the potential issues with this breed. Just FYI. |

I am looking for a soft haired wheaten terrier. Our four year old has bad allergies and after much research, my husband and I have decided on this lovely breed. Unfortunately, I am a stay at home mom and we only have my husband's police pay. Does anyone know of anywhere I can adopt/purchase a wheaten puppy not quite as expensive($700 and higher is what I have been quoted by various breeders)? I really want to get a puppy because we want our little boy to grow up with his doggy. Thank you for any assistance in this matter! |

She runs to any door being opened but when she sees its me with my headphones on going for my daily walk she gets in the back of her crate or goes and lies down and pretends she sleeping. Isnt this strange? We have her contained in the yard by invisible fencing so I would think she would love being on the otherside but...I have tried coaxing her to come and have picked her up and carried her out but the next day its the same thing. Hi, We are looking for a good groomer in the southern Rhode Island area who knows how to handle and to groom a lively Wheaten terrier. This week our current groomer sheared our dog completely because she said he was too knotted. Granted he missed two weeks of brushing while in the kennel, but I still think there might have been a less drastic approach.
I wonder how long before he begins to resemble anything close to a Soft-coated Wheaten again.
Also wondering if anyone else has experienced behavior problems with their wheatie when visitors are around. We seem to have a lose of control when company arrives.
Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Ann |

special diet from vet whose trying and baby food but I would like to get him over this. Contacted breeder who is worthless and will not return calls. But I do remember when we got him she told me about a kidney thing (I think) that pops up every once in awhile in the 8th or 9th year. Can anyone give some direction or insight on this? We have a 4 month old Wheaten puppy. The breeder we got her from suggests that we feed her twice a day. The morning meal consists of a high-price dry kibble[one that cant be purchased in a store], a spoonful of canned food, and a tablespoon of yogurt, cottage cheese, or scrambled eggs. The second meal consists of the dry kibble, canned food, dry milk, a vitamin supplement, vitamin C, and a garlic tablet. Does this sound correct? I am wondering why there needs to be so much supplementing? Any thoughts on proper feeding would be appreciated. |

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier: A little warning: my experience with the petsmart
|
Posted Date: 2000-05-15 16:41:00 By: TinaL
This is a copy of the e-mail I sent to petsmart storehelp
To whom it may concern in your quality control department:
On Saturday May 13, 2000. I took my dog, Crunchy, a mixed breed of a soft-coated Wheaton terrier, to your Petsmart store located around 2300 N. Elston in Chicago. I had made a 10:30 grooming appointment the previous Saturday. We arrived early. This was our first visit to the grooming Department at Petsmart. When we arrived the appearance of the grooming area seemed fairly clean, this bit of information is important for it did not stay this way at all. When asked what type of cut I would like for Crunchy, I stated that I wanted a terrier cut and when prompted to blade size I judged by an example she had on the counter so I said since it was for the summer, that her body be cut with a 7 blade and her tail and head trimmed up but to leave it fairly long. I mistakenly asked the women to use her best judgement. Trusting that she was a professional groomer. |

Go to the SCWTCA website at scwtca.org and locate breeders to contact. There is info about rescue there too. If you got Hobbes from a breeders, contact the breeder and let them know you would like another. Sometimes they have a show prospect that didnt work out, a puppy who was returned or the like. |

Hi Tina, well I couldnt catch all of your post but from the most of it I guess you wont be going to pet smart again. I am a prof. Dog Groomer have been for 15 years have 2 ret. show dogs(not wheats)so I know the pet/show worlds. As A groomer I must say one of our toughest breeds are wheatons. Most owners do not properly brush and comb, and when we tell them we are not going to torture the dog de matting him/her they get furious and usually either let us shave the pup or take it home.Which going somewhere else is fine w/ me I love dogs and its not gonna be me to hurt them for A buck.I am not saying your pup was in bad cond. to shave Im just adding in this because as a groomer I need to.:) Also to groom a dog when you have 10 other pups that same day( pooping, peeing, jumpin around trying to bite and so on)it usually takes between 3 and 5 hrs. Here is what you should do before just going to "groomer joe" ask around call the vets in your area, training schools if you see a well cut dog on th |

Our 10 year old wheaten stopped eating about 2 weeks ago. We took her in for extensive testing.
Her bloodwork was wonderful, she had a slight infection in her gums but other wise looked great.
They did ultrasounds, x-rays etc but it was not until they did biopsies that they discovered liver cancer.
It is not a cancer that grows tumors, it is a "disperse" cancer. Unfortunately, we will have to put her to sleep soon.
It is a rare cancer, but Ive heard rumors that wheatens are predisposed to this. Does anyone know anything
about this? |
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier: I would like a Wheaten.

Hi, my name is Abby and I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am 12 years old, and my mom is allergic to dogs, with the Wheaten as an exception. We are sure that the Wheaten does not make my mom sick, because we have visited a few houses of friends who have Wheatens, and my mom has had no reactions. I have 3 brothers with the ages of 18, 15, and 4 1/2. I live in an average-sized house, and I have an average-aized yard. My family has never owned a dog before, but I know that we are very capable of owning one! We do not have a fence, but if we did get a Wheaten, we would have an invisible fence installed. I have 1 pet; a guinea pig. When I first asked my mom if we could get a dog, I wanted it so badly that I volunteered to pay for it myself, with my own money. That was a little over a year ago, and I have saved $1, 262 from babysitting and petsitting around the neighborhood. My family decided that the best time to get the dog would be in the summer, around the middle of June, so that w |

I have been doing research on the wheatens and started to look for a breeder. And i just came across info stating that wheatens are not good with cats. I have 3 cats and it is important that my dog will get along with them. I was wondering if anyone who has the breed could please comment on this subject. Thank you. |

hello everyone, my name is kerry and im 13. I live in Sarver,P.A. I have 2 parents and an older bro.hes 16. My family has had dogs before. we had a basset hound and it died of old age:( and then we had a mutt and we gave him away because of my allergies. We have come upon this breed and we really want to get it. One big reason is because of my allergies and they are suppose to be not bad for allergies. someone would be home with this dog most of the day with 7 hours at the most with out it. our family is very loving and knows the responsibilities of taking care of a dog. If any breeder sees this message please email me at aeropostale_05@hotmail.com and let me know of any information available on your puppies. p.s. we were kindof hoping we could get this puppy sometime in the early june! thanx byebye |

The year was 1976, I was five. Clancy, our 8 month old Irish Wheaten Terrier accidentally scratched me and I had to get
five stiches in my cheek. He lasted about 6 months more. There were six kids in my family under the age of 13 and this
pooch was a bit too much work for my poor mom (and a little too jumpy!). My parents took poor Clancy on a one-way trip
to the country. We never saw him again. Ive been in love with Wheatens since this time and would love to have my own. Please
help me find one. I live in Virginia am moving to Massachusetts and would provide a loving home to one cute wheatie. |
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier: Looking for a female Wheaten puppy

We are interested in providing a loving family home for a female Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier or female Standard Schnauzer puppy.
We chose these two breeds because the dogs are very good with children, intelligent and hypoallergenic.
The dog would be well cared for in a climate-controlled home with a fenced backyard. We have two children, 6 and 9, who love dogs.
These two particular breeds are difficult to find, so we are open to suggestions about other breeds. Thanks. |

Im looking for a reputable breeder or rescue group for Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers in the NY Metro area. So far, the only one I can find on the web misspelled the name of the breed - thats not the type of breeder Im looking for! Im interested in an adult SCWT, and would prefer to rescue or adopt a retired female. Thanks. |

We are looking for a wheaten puppy, wether it is a rescue or from a breeder. We have a two $ 1/2 year old daughter who loves dogs and is around our friends dogs all the time, but has asked for her own. Of course we would be in charge of the care and some of the love, but she wants her puppy to love. I used to raise springer spaniels, but they can be too nippy with children. We miss the having a companion around the house. This breed came highly reccomended from our vet to match our life style. I stay at home and we have a large yard for our new addition to the family. If someone has more information on rescues or breeders for the sothern Michigan Northern Indiana area, please contact. We may even be willing to travel farther for certain situations. Thank you-Gen |

I have a 6 month old female wheaten terrier who was just spayed last monday. (3/27) She is still in severe pain and cant walk. She flips uncontrolably around like a fish just being taken out of water. Has anyone else had their puppy spayed and she acted like this? The vet insures me that this will just take time. He says she must have a low tolerance of pain. I am running out of patients...I want my wheaten back. Thanks for any input you may have on this subject. |

Please give a bit more information about yourself/your family other than the simple fact that you want a dog. Why do you want a Wheaten? Where do you plan to keep it? Do you work outside the home or will someone be home with the dog during the day? Is your yard fenced? Do you have kids, and what ages?
You know, the ususal things. Those of us who have dogs available arent necessarily going to respond to posts with no information. |
