Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier: Our Wheaten Barks When I Leave in the Morning

Our six-year old Wheaten Terrier barks when I leave in the morning. I suppose he sees me as the alpha dog/male, as I am the man of the house (my wife of course may differ!). Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. In any case, when I leave for work in the morning, he goes crazy! We have tried the barking collar approach, with limited success. Any insights would be most appreciated. |

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier: Wheatens can be lovely, too!
|
Posted Date: 2008-07-23 16:22:20 By: megan
My wheaten is fine--actually, he turned three this year and is a dream come true now.
He is a little shy and emotional but super loving, and when he has something he knows he isn't supposed to have, he growls but it is just a show. He never bites. Every now and then there is a person who he randomly just doesn't like and it isn't a problem--we just move on...he doesn't do anything to that person and I don't push the issue.
We had a Beardie that was super protective and aggressive, like some of you are reporting. He was a loving companion but we had to be SO careful with him. Riley is an angel.
I wouldn't rec. getting a dog from a random person online far away...but our wheaten was--we just picked him instead of flying him out....I have had many students whose families have had wheatens that were reportedly lovely (only one told me of a cousin who had one that nipped all the time).
I would hate for someone looking for a dog and thinking they had the perfect match in a wheaten, and then deciding not to based on isolated cases of animals that obviously have problems--be it canine schizophrenia (if that exists) or whatever.
Not ALL wheatens are like this. I am grateful that mine is healthy and sweet and happy--and a little quirky, true to the terrier type.
It\'s the risk you run, when you decide to take a live creature into your life--they have personalities and problems, just like children. I am sorry for the man whose Wheaten attacked him. That's sad. It, however, doesn\'t mean that it HAS to be his breeding that caused the problem, though. It could be that the dog is getting old and starting to deteriorate. Like I said, my Beardie would do this when you touched certain spots on his body--I imagine |

I myself thought I had done my research on the soft coated Wheaten breed. Ha! I must have been the one who got the genetically defective kind. Our dog is completely unsociable. People are blaming me because she had to fly on an airplane 0 that's why she's so crazy. OKAY... granted I will never purchase a dog online again from a "breeder" who sounded as old as my teenage daughter. But I don't put too much stake into a plane ride totally screwing up an animals mental psyche permantly, I'm sorry but that is just ignorant. My dog who has seemingly become more hostile toward all family members, accept my 3 year old at this point has me wondering if I should try to give her up for adoption or put her to sleep. Seriously, the snarling if approaching, the barking and growling at my older children, all whom have been raised around our previous dog and with no problems at all. They do not tease or are antaogonistic towards animals what so ever. To be quite honest, when they just simply try and giver her attention I fear one day she will nip their faces off! She lays underneath the kitchen table all day and rarely will wander into another room. We got another much kinder dog, thinking she was just a pac animal and maybe she would come out of her cocoon - nothing is helping her. She is disinterested in people and potentially threatening. She has bitten my husband while he was trying to help her x 2. This is just ridiculous - thankyou lady in Kansas for selling me a reject with papers. Whoever you are you should stop the spread of that gene. |
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier: beautiful wheaten needs a home

I am looking for a new home for my 4 year old beautiful male wheaten. He is a very loyal loving dog but he is in need of a home without young children. We have three little kids and he is very protective of them. Our house is too busy with many children running in and out. He is a loyal loving dog who loves nothing more than to sit on your lap and be pet but he has bitten once and doesn't like all the wrestling that goes on with the boys in the house. He would be a fabulous dog for a couple without children and a calmer house. He is a wonderful watch dog. Barks at strangers but once introduced is friendly to everyone. Please let me know if anyone is interested. We love him and want to find a home that is a better fit for him. |

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier: wheaten owners warning
|
Posted Date: 2008-06-16 01:12:17 By: george
This posting is a warning for all wheaten owners. In 1999 we brought home a wheaten terrier puppy. Throughout the last 9 1/2 years this dog has given us some of the funniest and memorable moments that our family has to share. He fit all the traits, zest for life, playful and puppy like for his entire life. He was a joy to our family and we loved him as much as any family could love a dog. A VERY good dog in every way.
On the morning of June 14th this all would change forever.
That night before, I was the designated driver for my friends retirement party. I got in the house at about 4:45am. I went into the bedroom leaned over and kissed my wife hello while petting our Wheaten hello as I always do. Our dog was quite familier with me coming home at this hour since I had worked nights the entire time we had him. A few minutes later I came back into the bedroom to go to bed. As has been the norm for most of his 9 years. The same as any other night I came in the bedroom and begain to coax him off the bed telling him it was time for "daddy to lay down". If he would not move I would slap on the bed and say come on boy get down. If he still resisted (terriers are stubborn) I would sometimes let him stay in the bed but just slide him over so I could get in. We got to this point and like I've done on Five hundred other nights I begain to slide him over. At this second little did I know that all our lives would change forever. For some reason when I moved him he snapped and bit me. I yelled "NO" At this point my dog, my loyal friend of over nine years proceeded to viciously and relentlessly attack me. He went first for my face... |

you really don't want this breed for small children...the above post about these dogs being aggressive is very true, we made a big mistake bu getting one 5 years ago for our daughter, based on the hypo-allergy status, it sure doesn't shed...but it thinks it's king of our castle, and if it doesn't like our daughter in the same room with it...it will attack her...we walk on egg shells around this dog most of the time, and can't let others, other than vet around it, it is very very protective of both my husband and myself, it has never been mistreated or trained to act in such a manner... |

You should be FULLY AWARE that although the wheaton as with many other dogs are painted to be very family friendly and overall great dogs. Based on first hand experience this is a breed that animal control officers are frequently called to deal with. There seems to be some sort of potential gene error that can cause them to be just as vicious and aggressive as many more published dangerous dogs. I would really recommend you look into a non-terrier based dog. Unfortunately, everyone seems to be saying this is on of the 'perfect' breeds - but this comes mostly from the breeders that are seeking to raise the $$$$ value of the dog. Even many of the supposed wheaton rescues really aren't real and will also lie as to the potential issues with this breed. Just FYI. |

I am looking for a soft haired wheaten terrier. Our four year old has bad allergies and after much research, my husband and I have decided on this lovely breed. Unfortunately, I am a stay at home mom and we only have my husband's police pay. Does anyone know of anywhere I can adopt/purchase a wheaten puppy not quite as expensive($700 and higher is what I have been quoted by various breeders)? I really want to get a puppy because we want our little boy to grow up with his doggy. Thank you for any assistance in this matter! |

Heres one for you Wheaten lovers. My "shelby" who is almost one hates to go for walks. She runs to any door being opened but when she sees its me with my headphones on going for my daily walk she gets in the back of her crate or goes and lies down and pretends she sleeping. Isnt this strange? We have her contained in the yard by invisible fencing so I would think she would love being on the otherside but...I have tried coaxing her to come and have picked her up and carried her out but the next day its the same thing. Enjoy walking with your wheaten, wish mine would come with me |

Hi, We are looking for a good groomer in the southern Rhode Island area who knows how to handle and to groom a lively Wheaten terrier. This week our current groomer sheared our dog completely because she said he was too knotted. Granted he missed two weeks of brushing while in the kennel, but I still think there might have been a less drastic approach.
I wonder how long before he begins to resemble anything close to a Soft-coated Wheaten again.
Also wondering if anyone else has experienced behavior problems with their wheatie when visitors are around. We seem to have a lose of control when company arrives.
Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Ann |
