Hi, Casey!
As puppies, they are real excitable, and at times, do not really concentrate on what you want them to do. My \"Austin\", a tri-colored cocker spaniel was just like you pup, believe it or not, and that\'s why I\'m responding!
The dog has so many new things to explore, its new home and meeting everyone in the family, etc.
I found that taking your pup to obedience class really helps both of you relate to each other, and that\'s where they learn how to respond to you, as it\'s trainer. (After 8 weeks of training, both you and the dog will be \"very happy with the results\"! Walk outside with him, and show him the area you want him to go to!
Before you know it, he will pick up a scent, and lift his leg. And everything else \"good\" will follow! Be sure to praise him when he does right.
(with a \"Good Boy\"!) Then ask him to sit, and put your right hand on his rear, when starting out. Then later, when you say: \"Austin, Sit!\",
you just have to point your index finger & say: Sit! . . . and he will do it, because he knows he will get a treat.
Good Luck! And just have a lot of patience with your new friend . . . (Dogs don\'t forget their Mom & brothers & sisters, so he needs a little time to enjoy your love & patience.
Sincerely,
Kim
p.s.--
Also, when you sign-up for a class, let them know how old your pup is . . . that way they can advise you when to start a class! Good Luck!
And enjoy each day with your pet! They really look forward to learning and being praised when they do well! HAVE FUN! THEY GROW UP TOO FAST!
