rescue dog ( For Pagoda)

We rescued a little dog, we thought it was a Shih Tzu, I think now after we had him groomed , we had to have him shaved, because he was in horrible shape, that maybe he may be shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso mixed. I would really like to find out something about their personalitys. He growls a lot like he will eat you up, but sometimes I think that is his defense. He hasn't bitten anyone so far, but my groomer had to put a muzzle on him to groom him, and this was after he was sedated. Also, is there any way to find out how old he may be. What is the best food for these kind of dogs?Thank you in advance.
