I have a Chinook(Sled Dog), 17 months old. He has been to the vet for his constant itching. Hair scrapings were taken and mange was ruled out. I am giving him Fatty Acid capsules but they only help a little. I can't find anything on him to indicate why he's itching. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

Our family is looking for a male samoyed puppy. We live in Castlegar, British Columbia, Canada. I'm having a hard time finding Samoyed breeders near my area. What are the pros and cons of dealing with long distance breeders. I've been navigating on this site for someone in Washington, thinking that's the closest to us. If anyone can help please post here, thank you. |

Can anyone help me? I have an adult Sammmy I adopted from another family that couldnt keep her anymore. According to them, shes had three families in her 2 1/2 years of life. I am her fourth family. She is very untrusting of anyone at this point(understandable) and therefore hard to train. I have a small terrier dog that gets along very well with her. She tends to immitate the small one at times so I know shes trying. She gets plenty of exercise in our gated back yard. Lately she urinates in her crate when we leave for even less than an hour. (We have to leave her crated because she tears up everything if we dont). She has no problem sitting in her feces or urine. I dont know how to break that habit. Any ideas? Thanks! |

I have Dominators Grandaughter. She is now 13 years old. I would like this particular line in a pup. The Johnsons in the Northwest had this line and I would be most interested in speaking to someone who has the line or knows if the Johnsons are still breeding with their number. My home number is (413) 7899934. Thank you,

I am the new owner of an adult Samoyed female. She was adopted from a SPCA shelter. She is a wonderful pet thus far. Our only real concern is her shedding. It is very bad. It has been bad for at least 4 weeks. I understand these dogs "blow coat" twice a year, but is this something I am going to have to live with all the time? She lives inside with us and I have white hair all over the carpets. Can anyone out there share your knowledge about this? Thanks. |

Samoyed: re: New owner of adult Samoyed with questions
|
Posted Date: 2000-07-01 00:19:00 By: Samsara
Hi, I love this breed, but you need to know some grooming tricks. The best thing you can do is get a powerful blower/dryer. When your dog is shedding, it will blow out all the loose coat, and also a lot of dust and dirt. It actually will part the coat down to the skin, and is a good substitute for combing. (Do this outside when theyre shedding!) And of course, it dries the dog after a bath. Frequently, the dog looks like they need a bath, but after a good blow-out, they look fine.
You can brush or comb from the outside forever without getting that undercoat out. You need to learn a technique called line-combing. That is the only way to get down to the skin if you dont have a blower.
If your dog is shedding and you want to get it all out, a bath will help things along. A light creme rinse will help the hair fall out. Dont use too much and make sure to rinse it well. It tends to attract dirt to your clean white dog otherwise. One caution, the dog MUST be thoroughly line co |

Wow, if you think this is jumping down someones throat, you are very naive about internet bulletin boards. That is probably how the dog ended up in the shelter to begin with. The buyer was not informed about the breed or how to train them. This dog was obviously bred by a backyard breeder who did not screen buyers nor be responsible or caring enough to take back his dogs if the owner cant or doesnt want to keep them. I do not have Sammies but have friends that do and know what their house is like and I groom and show her dogs. I know what she goes through and I know what she asks people interested in buying pups. The first question she asks is if you have ever had the breed before, do you realize how much they shed? Do you have experience training a big dog? Then someone person goes to the shelter and sees a dog they like the looks of but knowns nothing about the temperament, training, amount of shedding. And then the poor dog ends up back at the shelter or locked up in the garage |

You know some people dont research a breed before they buy or adopt. We all think everyone should but the fact is people that arent born into the dog field just dont know and they find a dog they like and adopt it. At least she has found the message board and is trying to help her new family member, lets not jump down her throat! Good luck and dont give up with that new pup! :) |

Take her to A prof. groomer every 10 weeks. The more you groom her the less she will shed. |

Posted Date: 2000-06-20 15:45:00 By: Sandy
Yes, twice a year it will be like this. Didnt you research the breed before you bought it? Samoyeds are probably the worst shedders. The only advice I can give is to take a slicker brush and go outside and brush, brush , brush until you have carpel tunnel syndrome or fill up 2 garbage bags full whichever comes first. That is what living with sammies is about, having white hair all over everything all the time. All over the floors, the furniture, your clothes, your car. |
Samoyed: How are Sammys with a baby?
|
Posted Date: 2000-05-22 09:16:00 By: Ken
I have a male Sammy (Teddy). He is about 1 1/2 years old. He is constantly getting into mischief. He sneaks into the bathroom and finds a towel or something and destroys it. I think he gets a kick out of getting in trouble. But now we have a baby on the way, and I am worried. Teddy will be 2 years old when the baby comes. Do I need to get rid of Teddy? Any advice will be appreciated. |

Hi
My sister has her second samoyed and the dog once literally passed out from fright (we think) with the UPS man came to deliver something. Last week, she didnt pass out but came extremely close to it when she saw someone cross country skiing near their house. She always sleeps for about 5 hours after this happens. Any thoughts??

Samoyed: Marking in the house
|
Posted Date: 2000-02-02 02:47:00 By: nessa
My 9 year old male will not stop peeing in the
house. He will only do it when we are not home.
Leave him outside you say? He is an escape artist.
And not only that he will chew and claw his way
through whatever is obstructing his path back
into the house. We have a small child and he
keeps marking everything. I dont want my daughter
stepping in something I may have missed. I dont
even want to get started on the condition of my
carpets. Short of giving him away what can we do? |
