My new (six year old) rescue pug has a rounded back. Is this just and "undesirable" characturistic like a straigt tail or long legs or the sign of some ailment?

If he's not having problems walking I would wait and see. It will be very obvious right away if he starts having hip problems. If you want to find out everything possible about pug health problems, do a google search "pug health problems". There are literally hundreds of sites all about pug health.
