Hi,
We have a 1 year old female PWD. Looking to add a second one. Looking at another female from same parents. Is this ok or should we be getting a male or a different genetic make-up for the dogs to get along. The one year old is good with other dogs.... |

We are a family of four whose dog of 13 years passed away of old age. We would like to fill the hole in our family with a PWD.
We have plenty of land, water, time and love to give.
Would prefer a female since that is what we are used to.
Doesn't have to be AKC and would consider a mix.

Help, Im confused! Ive never had a dog before and I always promised my husband we would get one. Well now seems to be the time. Im a stay at home mom of 3 kids(2,6, and 8). Im fully aware that this will become my dog, and Im ready for the commitment (I think!) I always thought this would be the right dog because it doesnt shed , is intellegent, and great with kids. However, I keep hearing how much energy pwd have. A lab sounds so laid back, but between the shedding and barking I could go crazy. Any suggestions? Please respond to docfloss@aol.com

Chubby,
I will not lie to you, these dogs need attention. I work and have managed to keep my boys happy with daily walks seperately after work. The need and love to learn. Read all you can on the breed before you make a decision. You have to be able to make the committment for the rest of the dogs life-about 12 yrs. They do need attention. I have to keep my guys playing and learning all the time. These guys think things through and you can actually see them thinking by their expressions. Be aware of genetic health problems in PWDS before you take the plunge. There is also PWD rescue. good luck |

My husband and I saw our first PWD about six weeks ago on a weekend trip to Annapolis, and we loved it!! We have a 7 yr. old chocolate lab, and now hes an angel, but the first two years can be pretty rough. He chewed up every pair of shoes, socks, snotty tissues (from the garbage), little throw rugs, and anything else he could get his teeth on! From what Ive heard, and people Ive talked to, its pretty typical lab behavior, so be careful!! Although, after the first 2 or 3 years, theyre perfect, very smart, easily trained, and wonderful with kids. Good luck on your choice!! |

I have a 7 year old PWD with double coat hair. I have been a dog lover my entire life and this is by far the best dog I have ever had. Her personality and energy fit me to a T! I live in Wichita, Kansas and would love to have a companion for Molly as she still has alot of energy for a puppy. I am not interested in breeding or perfection but the personality. If anyone has a puppy or young adult that they are finding difficulty placing please contact me! I came to be the happy mother of Molly because she had been rejected from a couple of other homes. |

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts about a good companion breed to have with a PWD? I would love to get another and am thinking about rescue...have plenty of time to waite as I have a 14 month old baby girl in addition to my two older children. Been thinking maybe there is another breed that would be a good match for a PWD. Anyone have other breeds along with their PWD. TIA |
Portuguese Water Dog: PWD info Part 2)
|
Posted Date: 2000-07-26 08:41:00 By: Haleakala
Expect a good breeder to ask you MANY questions. They will want to
ascertain that you are 1) appropriate for the breed, and 2) help select
a pup that will suit you. If they suggest the PWD might not be right
for you, dont be offended. Most folks end up NOT getting a PWD
locally.
There are very few breeders, and most of us dont breed often. Speaking
for myself, I breed pretty infrequently. Breeders who breed in quantity
are not necessarily "bad", but I would ask lots of questions about how
much time they devote to the pups.
When you get the breeder referral list, please note that breeders on it
are those who signed an agreement with the club stating they would
abide by certain ethical guidelines (this means, among other things,
that they inform buyers if parents have not been tested for and PASSED
all health exams.
Note: it does NOT mean they are breeding only OFA, CERF, etc.
passed dogs!) and were willing to pay the club |

Please go to the PWDCA web site - http://www.pwdca.org/
for extensive information. For breeder referral, Sandra Overton :
soverton@WHIDBEY.NET
For rescue, Mary Harkins: MCHarkins@worldnet.att.net
I cannot stress enough he importance of finding a reputable hobby
breeder who has the best interest of the PWD in mind, and will help
match you with a PWD whose background is well tested for genetic ills.
Avoid breeders in any breed mass producing puppies.
Getting a puppy quickly, of a certain coat type, gender or color is NOT
important. Finding the right family companion is.
They are an active, energetic, extremely bright and creative
breed. They are NOT a dog to just lay by the fireplace and doze. This
does not mean they are constant activity in the home or "hyper" though.
A properly exercised PWD certainly can understand "thats ENOUGH, now
go lie down!" when need be. I have found that they do well in homes
with anot |

I am interested in either adopting an adult or purchasing a puppy. I live on Long Island and spend lots of time at and on the water. I also own a retail store where the dog would be spending lots of time. We have a huge yard almost an acre on which our shop is located and lots of young people to play with him/her. I was attracted this breed because my father, who lives with me has lots of allergies and Ive read that this breed of dog has a non-allergenic coat. Could someone direct me to a breeder in or close to my area ?
Thank you, Rick Wright |

My nine month old puppy is lately going outside in the yard and not coming when called. He sometimes stays outside for hours. If you try to go near him he will run away. He also is very shy of people where he will run from them. I have had him since 31/2 months old. He has gone to 2 puppy classes and is on his refresher third. In the house he is fine except for his fear of new people. What is the problem? |

check your local humane society or shelter. i have found 2 that have been turned in. one with papers. both are pureb red. one was turned in because he chewed. he was 6 mo. ol and supposed to chew. the othere was 9 m o. and dug a hole. if you are wondering both are black with a little white and 1 wavy / 1 curly. i found a 3 rd in a shelter in ohio , it was picked up as a stray. owner claimed. surf the web looking for terrier mixes. thats what most shelters classify the wavys as or poodle mix for the curly. as shelter worker to check for rear webbed feet. |
