pekingese skin malady

My pek has recently been diagonse with a thyroid condition which manifested itself via a skin disorder -- blackish skin color on her sides and back, with the fur not growing in those areas. also, her belly and head is of normal color.

My question is has anyone elses pek been diagnosed or had this type of skin disorder??

We live in a rural area and I am not too confident that our vet is familiar with our Pek breed, so any info others, like yourself(s) would be helpful!!
