I saw your post on breederweb.com and thought I'd suggest a visit to the Newfoundland Club of America's page at http://www.newfdogclub.org/ It offers the NCA breeders list and a list of regional Newf clubs. I believe the Southeastern Newfoundland Club would most likely cover your area. http://www.senewfs.com/ is the address for their page.
Most likely if you find a breeder you like who doesn't have puppies immediately available, they'll offer to put you on a list for an upcoming litter or refer you to a breeder with similar ethics who does have puppies available. You might also visit the Newf Club of Northern California's page on "So You What a Newfoundland," it provides a great list of things to speak with breeders about. Good luck on your search!
