has anyone had a problem with cherry eye? my 9month old has had surgery twice - she has to have it again because the gland popped back out. Hopefully it will work this time. I had hoped to breed her if her hips and heart certify. What about the cherry eye - should I NOT breed her?

Help. Our 1st Newfie and she's 9 mos. old and is a complete monster. She's an angel when we're at doggy class, but that's it. She barks in her crate all night so we get no sleep. If we let her out she eats everything. She even knows she shouldn't. She also opens doors (pocket door to closet, sliding glass) and helps herself. I don't know where to put her or how to handle the discipline. I have NEVER had such a rotten puppy ever. She's eaten a pager, checkbook, money, multiple pairs of shoes, magazines, kleenex, toilet paper, pills, rugs, towels, etc. She's too big to put things high enough. And she jumps gates. Do Newfies have major issues w/being crated? If so, what do others do?? We both work during the day, but I let her out at lunch every day to split things up! We have invisible fence so I can't leave her out during the day for that long of a period (we're not allowed fences). Help w/any suggestions or comments. Thanks so much!! :( |

Our 1 yr old Newfoundland is shedding so much lately. He's an inside/outside dog. I groom him once a week, he looks wonderful. I thought this would really help with the shedding, but I find myself still vacuuming every day!!! I was just wondering if other Newfy owners are having the same dilemma. |

We have a 3mth old newf named Bucky. This is our 1st newf. We have to give him a bath once a week because he smells. Depending who you talk to this is good or bad. His cage also must be cleaned, not because it is dirty, because of the smell. I brush him daily. I read that it could be his food. I feed him science diet puppy formula. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Brady |

Hi! Does anyone know where to find a good form on the internet, that I can use to contact Breeders? I need something that includes all the important questions about the various health issues. I am not sure quite what to ask Breeders and find it odd, trying to ask questions about a puppy I can't even see. Anyone have a format that worked for them? Any ideas are welcome. I have already visited the Newfoundland Club of America and read their stuff but still have no idea what to say when I actually write to a breeder. |

Hello to All Newfie Fans:
I am trying to decide which color newfie I want. I have owned a wonderful landseer, and was now thinking of a brown or gray or black. I narrowed it down to brown or black because I couldn't find a really good picture of a nice looking gray - they seem wolf-like. My question to all of you is this: in terms of which is smarter, easier to work with and train and more willing to pull carts and such, what is your opinion - is brown or black better? I have heard landseers are the smartest...what do you think? |

Can anyone tell me about aggression in Newfies? My puppy is 10 months old. Loves people, except when they have food! 2x he has shown aggression around someone who was eating -- he barked and went for the food from their hand! Also, he's shown aggression towards other dogs -- but that's our mistake for not enrolling him in puppy kindergarten earlier. He's now enrolled in obedience classes and IS improving his behavior around the dogs in his class. Can anyone give advice or explain the aggression???

I've got a regular population of the neighborhood's black labs that think my lawn in a "dump" zone, but I'd never shoot any of them. So we got our Newf pup,3 1/2mths old. She is playful, barks at times, and
can though playing will at times growl with her toys, nip at our pants, and
hands if we have them down. She throws herself on her back to be petted,
and though were are trying to housebreak her,and making strides she will
bite at her lease, and and tug at her collar. WHAT IS GOING ON,IS THIS
WHAT PUPPIES DO! WHAT DOES A NEWF PUPPY DO! We have read
books, etc, but personal experiences is what we seek now.

Hi: I hate to post this on a message board, but Im having very bad luck. I do pet assisted therapy and need a puppy for my old people at a skilled nursing facility. Im told Newfoundlands are perfect for this. My old people had lost their beloved dog in January and we need another one desperately. Im asking that the puppy be donated to the home so my work with them can continue. No one realizes the importance these animals are to the old people. In return I can have articles written in local papers and perhaps even LA news media attention. Also offered is a tax donation letter to file with the breeders income taxes. Any other details can and will be gladly worked out either by me or the home. Please eMail me at boomer-dude@yahoo.com. I know breeding is a business, but we need your help. Thanks |

I am looking for some information on Newfoundland puppies and hip dysplasia. I would like to know if you can detect hip dysplasia when they are at six months old; and if not, how soon could it be detected? If we catch it early on, will we be able to fix it without giving our puppys life? Are there any exercises we could possibly do before we know to possibly decrease the risk of our puppy getting it? I would like to know answers to these questions and many others. If someone would please write me back, I would be very greatful. |

Hi, I had a question about grooming Newfoundlands. we recently got back from vacation and boarded our Bailey at a Kennel that is also a Vet clinic. they also do grooming. I talked to the groomer when I dropped her off and told her not to cut her hair short-she was matted in the back from constantly swimming in our pond. Well, needless to say when we picked her up, the groomer shaved every bit of hair off her except for her head and also half of her tail. I was wondering if would damage the way her undercoat grows back and the rest of her?? If anybody out there knows could you please email me back.
Thanks,

Newfoundland: Drymouthed newfoundlands......msg

Posted Date: 2000-06-07 18:19:00 By: sarnewfie
i feel that there is a misunderstanding about this, my newfs do not drool unless: there is food present, a female that my male likes, the drool is minimal, unlike that of other newfs i have come across, so to say drymouthed in my humble opinion means most of the quiet time that is spent with owner.
if in a new area or excited there is mimimal.
ok
so the person that posted below in all caps, what is your interpretation.
it is weird how people can read so much into things, in saying this about my newfs i always explain that when they take a drink watch out!!!
i never tell them to expect them to be totally drool free just that some of them i have been around you practically need a wet suit to be around! ick! Flugers that stick to the wall and crystalize, lol
i once had a nautica dog here for a week, he was totally gross, but such a sweetheart i overlooked it but was so thankful that the newfs i own are not even 3/4 as bad as he was, now that is not to cut nautica down, |

Newfoundland: newfs and fleas

What is the recommended product for flea control on a newf?
Weve used the veterinarian prescribed pills, liquids... but have also heard about herbal or natural remedies (garlic, brewers yeast mixed in with food, as well as a product from the pet stores called EDGE. We have 2 other dogs, a Lahaso, and a Chow mix. Now we have our Newf and Im sure those of you more experienced with a Newf probably have preferences. All our dogs are in-house dogs.

Newfoundland: looking for a female newf
|
Posted Date: 2000-05-07 14:47:00 By: amanda
I am a 20yr old female who is in the US Air Force. I have had much experience with newfs. As a child we used to have one. Now that I am on my own. I am looking for the right newf. I be moving in to a house here in the next few months. And by that time i am hoping to have found a newf. I am looking for a female pup. If there is anyone who can help me. I am in Nebraska and I am willing to do what ever it takes to get a newf. I would like to see her first though and I would like to meet the family, and see her backround. And would like to see the parents. PLEASE if there is anyone who can help me. Feel free to e-mail me at: amanda.barnett@offutt.af.mil. I would love to hear from you.
Yours truly,

Newfoundland: Reputable gray breeders

Hello, Im a college student at the University of Illinois, and am preparing to graduate and go off into the "real world," and as part of my preparation, Im in the market for a Newf puppy. My family has owned a couple of Newfs while I was growing up, and they are absolutely the best, I just love them.
The thing is though, I would really be interested in a gray pup this time around. I was wondering if anyone on this message board could make any recommendations for highly reputable, respectable Newf breeders with gray litters, preferably somewhere in the Midwest or on the west coast (I will be relocating to the west coast after graduation). Im not interested in showing him, he would be just a pet, but I still want to get the highest quality pup I can, and I am willing to pay top dollar.
Thanks in advance,
-Kent R. Spillner |
