Charles Darwin theorized that the Maltese Dog could be as old as 6,000 years; but conservative estimates place the Maltese Breed at around 2500 years old. The island where the breed originated was a mecca of trade and, as such, the dog was taken around the world by visiting travelers. They were exported throughout Europe and Asia and reach England in the 1300s. With their flowing silky coats they became quite popular with noble ladies.
Today this dog is an extremely popular companion and is known for their pure white coat that reaches the floor. They lack an undercoat, which makes the Maltese an ideal pet for those with allergies. They can be styled with a puppy cut, cropping of the Malteses hair to about two inches, or traditional style where the dog's straight hair will reach the ground. Also, this breed of dog is subject to tear stains because of their white hair. These can be cleaned with special products and it has been said that purified water reduces the troublesome eye stains that Maltese are notorious for.
The Maltese makes an affectionate house pet, they are wonderful lap dogs. They can easily meet their exercise needs indoors and make good pets for apartment living. Daily brushing of the coat is essential to keep it from matting, even if the dog is clipped. They are great with older children but can snap at younger ones, so it is important to make sure thy are socialized well. Maltese dogs are a very sociable dog breed with boundless energy. It is not uncommon for a Maltese puppy to show the same exhuberance as an adult dog. As for being a watchdog, they have a bark that must be trained out of them, or they will cry wolf every time they hear something outside. Maltese, however, are very easy to learn tricks and can be potty trained to go indoors in a box or special area you create.
