It appears that the Wavy-Coated Retriever, the Irish Setter and the Bloodhound were all used in attempt to improve the breed. In the 1800's the Golden Retrievers role changed over to gundog, helping their owners retrieve the ducks and birds they shot down. The Golden became adept at tracking and swimming in an effort to assit their owners in fetching their trophies. The Golden Retriever today is still used as a hunting dog, but is most often seen as a treasured family pet.
The Golden Retriever is probably most well-known for its gentle and affectionate temperament. They are good with children and other animals and are very people oriented, often used for the blind or as impairment-assistance dogs. They are intelligent and will take well to obedience training.
The Golden Retriever dog needs constant exercise, true to its nature. It does not thrive well in small apartments and also requires a good amount of grooming. They are shedding machines, and if left unbrushed for a few days will leave your furniture covered in fur. This breed requires plenty of daily exercise and enjoys occasional swimming.
The Golden Retriever will live 10-13 years on average, and can develop several diseases such as cancer and joint disease, so make sure you keep your golden on a revular vet schedule. Also, these retrievers will get very fat if they are not exercised, so they are not a breed for the sedintary. However, keeping golden retrievers happy with exercise will also serve well to keeping them healthy.
