The German Wirehaired Pointer was developed when the need for a versatile hunting breed prompted German enthusiasts to cross several types of hunting dogs. The old German Pudelpointer, German Shorthaired Pointer, Griffon, Bloodhound and Polish Water Dog were used to create this breed.

The German Wirehaired Pointer has been specifically bred with the energy to hunt all day long in rough terrain. If not given a suitable outlet for this energy they will be destructive and difficult to manage. Daily exercise should include at the very least an hour of running and playing outdoors. They are quite intelligent but can be willful, early obedience training is highly recommended. This breed is affectionate and protective of their family.
