The dogs generally come in a tan and black, with variants of all black and all white German Shepherds showing up around the world. As puppies, their ears will not perk up until they are well over 10 weeks old. They have a double coat of fur, and need their top and under coats well brushed and well taken care of or it will knot. Their bite is very strong, exerting over 1000 PSI if they are attacking. While the German Shepherd puppy is often curious but timid, they are fearless dogs as adults and must be trained well to respect their owner and home.
The German Shepherd Dog can make an excellent pet if its exercise and training needs are met. A dominant breed, early obedience training and socialization are very important with German Shepherd puppies. Without proper training and activity this dog can become aggressive and destructive against even their own homes. Because they are eager to please and take well to training, they will be happiest if they have a task or job to do. They excel in all kinds of activities, like agility, tracking, schutzhund, and obedience.
The GSD is prone to Hip dysplasia, eye problems incliding blindness, but in general is a strong and sturdy dog during most of its 12 year lifespan. They are very protective of their owners and a German Shepherd's loyalty is often cited as the reason dogs are man's best friend.
