The smallest of dogs, the Chihuahua originated in Mexico several hundred years ago and named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua. These dogs had a religious significance, their remains have been found in human gravesites. It was said that certain colors were considered sacred while others were used in sacrifices when their master died. Discovered in the mid 1800's, these small dogs have become an oddity and novelty among dog owners because of their small, apple-shaped heads and big-dog attitudes. They come in both long and short haired breeds, and are generally decent shedders.
The Chihuahua, because of its small stature, suffers from a variety of health issues ranging from breathing problems to even seizures from the way their brain's blood flow works. Their eyes, usually bulging out, can be subject to cataracts, glaucoma and even on rare occasions popping from their sockets. Despite seeming tough, chihuahua dogs are delicate and must be treated as such especially as puppies. If care is given to them, they can live for up to 15 years.
The Chihuahua makes a wonderful pet for someone who has a lot of time and love to give. They are extremely devoted and affectionate to their owners. Chihuahua puppies require a good amount of training to avoid breed characteristics such as jealousy and snapping at people they don't know. They must be properly socialized with both people and other dogs or risk becoming an aggressive small dog. They respond poorly to negative reinforcement and when training chihuahua puppies one should use treats as a positive means of reward. They make excellent companions, perfectly content to spend most of their lives sleeping on their owner's lap. With children, the danger is always that a boisterous child will hurt the small chihuahua and, as they are also prone to bone fractures, cause irreprerable damage to the dog. They are relatively easy to care for needing only weekly brushing and occasional baths. This breed is considered high-strung in that they are very sensitive to changes in their routine. They don't like strangers or being left alone. They can get all the exercise they need indoors, great care should be taken if they are outside in cold or warm weather. You can, if you start from a puppy age, train most chihuahuas to do their business in the house with relative ease.

e breed three Chi Babies.they are Maxwell, (6 months) Milo, (9 months) & Matilda (also 9 months). While Milo & Matilda are on the bigger side of the Chi scale at 7 & 9lbs, Maxwell is on the more average size at about 4 1/2lbs. Milo is a bit more on the lazy side compared to the other two & sometimes will just sit & watch the others play. He is also a bit insecure which we are working on with him. They are all very loving however & are always anxious to share kisses with their human\'s and with each other alike. Sometimes they\'ll lay in the sun bathing each others faces & making sure they are all looking their best. Then they will burrow in blankets, pillows, etc until they fluff it up just enough to get comfortable & then proceed to take a long nap. While none of them are the \"alpha\" (that\'s the humans job isn\'t it?!) our female, Matilda is by far the most bossy out of the group. If she wants to play, you\'d better play or else you\'ll get a \"donkey kick\" until she gets a reaction. Typical female!
I was always a big dog person & really was never fond of little dogs. However when wanting a new addition to our home, I did my breed research & found the Chihuahua to best suit my wants in a dog. Apparently they surpassed my expectations as we went from one to three Chihuahua\'s in 3 short months with absolutely no regrets.
My pups are already great minding as a result and as an example of that as you can see, they are easily \"pose-able\" for photographs. )\"
Unfortunately,I failed to post lots of photoes of my lovely Chihuahuas. But you can click to this websit chihuahua.dormitory.com, come on now, you can see our chihuahua babies which we are pround of and feel the happiness with us.

Recently a person who works with me bought a chi for their children. Because they do not want an animal in their home, they plan to have it out of doors. We have freezing weather in the west and they plan to have it out of doors in a \"dog house\" with insulation, a blanket, and a light bulb. I believe this is pure ignorant on the part of this person and is definently abuse. What should I do?

This week my 6 year-old male Chi was diagnosed with \"mature\" cataracts in both eyes...the weird thing is that they came on in a 3 week period. No trauma happened recently, but he has lived with some neurological probs. since a couple weeks old. Otherwise, extrememly healthy, strong , normal boy.How could this happen so fast? Am hoping to come up with enough money to do surgery on at least one eye. Anyone out there whose gone through cataracts with their baby?Would appreciate any advice...the little guy has gone through enough in his short life..

I recently had to put my 14 year old chihuahua to sleep. Her teeth had rotted so bad that the bacteria ate away her jaw and it broke. My only option was to put her to sleep. My male which was her life-long boyfriend, was so stressed out (we think) by the loss of her that his eye ball litterally popped out. Now I have read a couple things about this happening and that it is common in dogs with eyes that bulg.

I adopted a 3 yoa female and she\'s about to have puppies. I have heard so many rumors about the dangers, I\'m worried she may go into labor while I\'m at work. She is really big and her nipples are swollen, but no signs of milk. She is leaking a small amount of liquid from her Vagina, I guess that\'s what it\'s called in a dog. She has been staying really close by me for the last 2 days. I can\'t afford the vet right now and I\'m not sure she really needs it. Can someone tell me how I can tell when she is in labor and how long it usually takes for the first puppy to be born and how do I tell when she has the last puppy.

I found a small dog that I believe is a chihuahua. She has recently had a litter of puppies as evidenced by elongated but dry nipples. Her tail has been docked and the hair on her rump area and the docked tail is curly. Her ears and face look like the chihuahua pics I have seen, nose slightly upturned with big bulgy eyes. She is housebroken and seems very "at home" indoors. I would guess she is about 5 pounds and 6 inches high. She is not at all aggressive, but does not prefer the approach of my small grandchildren who adore and want to hold her. She does not growl or snap at them though. Could she be a mixed breed? Her color is that of a Yorkie- a small bit of white on her chest and tips of her paws- mostly black with brown muzzle, cheek spots and inner eyebrow area. Lower legs are brown and she has some spots of brown on her underside as well.
