Its name comes from the early 1100's when it was solely used as exactly its name implies: a Bull Dog. When dog fighting was outlawed in the 1800's, there was no longer a purpose for the Bulldog. Its existence was saved by dog lovers determined to preserve the breed. They successfully bred out the bulldog's aggression and turned it into a companion. They do shed, and the bulldog for all its cuteness is prone to a lot of illness with breathing and bad eyes, and sady does not have a very long life expectancy.
Compared to the olden day bulldog, they are quite the pacifist today, Bulldogs make excellent companions for children. They are affectionate and easy-going and are easy to train as long as they understand their role in the pack mentality. A weak owner will make for a dominant bulldog that runs the house. However, this aside, they are always looking to please their owners and thus are one of the most popular dog breeds. As puppies, they are balls of energy and you'll have a great time watching your bulldog puppy bounce around the house. Don't expect it forever. As soon as they start to pack on the pounds (usually above 45 lbs for their small stature), your bulldog will slow down to a snails pace and mainly love sitting next to you on the couch or going out for a small waddling walk.
Breeding bulldogs is much more difficult than normal dog breeds. Their litters of puppies are anywhere from 3-6, and are usually born via caesarian birth due to their enormous head sizes. This makes the bulldog puppy look adorable, however.
They will do well with weekly brushing, although care should be taken that the folds of skin on their face are kept clean and dry. Your house should be drool-proofed, as the bulldog is notorious for their slobbering habit. If you sleep with your dog in the room, you may also want to invest in earplugs as they snore very loudly. They are also quite sensitive to heat and heavy exercise, its best to keep this dog indoors on particularly hot days. English bulldogs may start out walking quickly, but its a very short duration of energy and will slow down quickly, so keep them on short walk times.
