The APBT has a bad reputation and is strictly controlled by legislation in several states and countries. The problem is not with the breed but with irresponsible people who treat them with cruelty in order to try and make them vicious. The APBT has never been bred for aggression towards people, in fact dogs that showed any people directed aggression were usually put down and never used for breeding. They are however extremely powerful animals with a strong urge to fight other animals. Early socialization may help get them used to cats and other dogs but some members of this breed will never be trustworthy with other animals. Because of this, and the fact that many people are afraid of them, they should never be allowed off-lead. APBT owners need to be overly conscious of this breed's bad reputation and do everything they can to be responsible owners, otherwise more restrictions will be placed on their ownership.
