Unlike many of the smaller terrier breeds, the Australian terrier requires little grooming. The hair between the eyes should be plucked and the longer hair on the legs and body should be stripped. This tough little dog makes a good watch dog and is quite protective of it's family. They are very alert and inquisitive, and should not be allowed off lead in an unfenced area. Australian Terriers can be gentle with children, although they should be watched around smaller animals. Early obedience training is recommended because they do possess the trademark terrier willfulness.
