The Rottweiler descended from the ancient Roman Mastiff. They were used primarily as a cattle drover, but also guarded livestock and property and later served as a draft dog. Only later was their ability as a police and military dog discovered. The Rottweiler is relatively quiet and inactive indoors. They love to play and run and need some form of physical and mental exercise daily. If training begins early this breed is quite easy to train. Care should be taken to properly socialize puppies and not to encourage aggressive behavior as they may become overly protective and dangerous as adults. They are naturally fiercely protective of their family and need no training to do so.

I have an 8month old rotweiller who i have noticed walks very funny by hopping with the two back legs. At first, i thought it was just because she was growing and still a puppy. Then i noticed when she was 5months old the back legs couldn\'t carry her weight so thats why she sits most of the time.
Please what do i do as i took her to a VET who inturn said i should feed her calcium. I am doing this now and it\'s not working. She still walks around hoping with the two legs behind her and can\'t jump with the two legs. I am told it\'s called hip displacia.
What do i do?

I have owned rotts for 21 years. They are wonderful dogs when you have them handled. They are not stupid. It is usually the human that is stupid. I have a beautiful male at this time who will be 1 year old in February. I would like to get in touch with people who have a female and would like to breed her. Bogart is full blooded German and has a perfect lineage. If you have any contacts please get in touch. gmc935@charter.net

I have a rott who will be around 3 yrs old in February. He got attached to me within 2 months and you can tell he is my puppy. He takes commands from me and my dad only, sometimes from my mom and siblings. He is very good with other children, although he tends to get a little hyper at first. He LOVES being around other dogs. He is a \"gentle giant\" and everyone in the family loves him. He is also an AMAZING guard dog and very protective of me. We used to have a male and female rott and that\'s what got me hooked. I am forever in love with rotts and wouldn\'t want any other dog. These dogs are my favorite and they are the best dogs to have as a friend and a guard dog.

I would like someones opinion regarding our 12 year old Male Rottweiler Shepherd Mix. The dog had been a very healthy dog his entire life, with only 1 occasion of him getting sick (lost weight but treated with antibiotics) about 3 years ago which he recuperated from. Last Saturday our dog was taken to the local vet in El Centro, CA for a swollen belly and not eating much, this condition had started about 4 days earlier. It was right before closing time for the clinic and vet just observed dog (no tests) and gave us pretty much 3 options 1) put to sleep 2) do nothing 3) do exams of heart and abdomen. He reminded us that exams would be about $1000 but they would need to wait until Monday since local lab was already closed. He added that if we took dog to a San Diego emergency hospital it would be even more expensive. His prognosis was that whatever we found out would be something he would be unable to help with. He added that if it was his dog he would put him to sleep. He pretty much discouraged us from seeking treatment. Unable to make decision we opted to take him home. Our dog was still walking, drinking water and sitting with his neck up until he died 3 days later. I am now realizing that I let vet influence my decision to seek treatment and will never know what problem our dog had. Any advice would be helpful.

Rocky is 1 yr.7 mo.and he is extremely spoiled and attached to me several months ago the Vet requested for me to start letting him sleep outside but, now that the weather has changed and it has gotten cold I let him sleep inside. All of the work I put in to get him use to sleeping outside in his doghouse has went out the window. When I let him in the back yard for a short time he barks, howls, and scratches at the door. I want to know if he is doing that because he is cold or spoiled? So that there is no guilt can somebody PLEASE tell me at what temperature is unsafe for him to be outside for long periods of time and maybe over night? The temperature here are 20\'s(feels like 10\'s) in the day and 10\'s(feels like 1-8) at night. I love my dog and I want NOTHING to happen to him.

The weather here is a little out of the norm for us, it\'s been in the 20\'s in the day and 10\'s at night. I wanted to know if it was safe for my Rottie to sleep outside in his doghouse? If not at what temperature is safe for him to sleep outside?

SAMPSON IS IN OUR PRYAERS. I KNOW WHAT HE MUST MEAN TO YOU BUT DO NOT ALWAYS GET ONE OPINION. SOMETIMES ANOTHER VET MIGHT SEE SOMETHING DIFFERENT THEN THE FIRST. KEEP ALL YOUR OPTIONS OPEN BUT ALSO USE YOUR HEAD WHEN IT COMES TO VETS AS TO MOST OF THEM ITS JUST A BUSINESS. I WISH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND THE GENTLE GIANT MY BEST WISHES. G-D BLESS YOU!

I have a 7 year old male Rottweiler named Sampson and a couple of weeks ago he started limping and holding up his right paw. Well, x-rays were taken and our vet is 99.9% it is cancer. He just had surgery for a biopsy and we are waiting for the results to come back. Sampson is our "gentle giant". He lives with our cats and is always with our female Bischon. Pray that this is NOT cancer and that Sampson will be alright. I am so worried; I can't imagine not having Sampson.
