The Pomeranian is the smallest of the spitz type dogs and probably has Samoyed, Norwegian Elkhound, and other northern breeds in it's ancestry. They arrived in England in the 1800's where their size was further reduced.

The Pomeranian is a dainty toy dog with a profuse coat. They have minimal exercise needs and are well suited to apartment living. They are quite intelligent and take well to obedience training. They tend to be easily excitable and make good watchdogs as they will bark to let you know when a stranger approaches. It is very important to establish a regular grooming schedule to keep their long double coats from becoming hopelessly matted.
