The main characteristic of this breed is energy. They were bred to work hard all day outside, and if they are not allowed an outlet for this energy and intelligence they will channel it into destruction and unwanted behavior. They need several hours a day of interactive exercise and play, simply putting them outside to amuse themselves is not enough. Being somewhat independent, early socialization and obedience training are a must. They are naturally protective of their property and family and wary of strangers. Their strong herding instinct needs to be channeled into other activities, or they may try and herd their owners, children, cats, anything they can. They make good companions for older children who aren't intimidated by mouthing or chasing by an active dog.
